OBITUARY


Irwin R. Reither


Services were held in memory of Irwin R. Relther, 54, on Wednesday, March 27 at 2 p.m. at the Kernville District Cemetery in Wofford Heights. Rev. Louis Gerdes, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church, officiated at the graveside services. Ardis Walker delivered the eulogy. Reither died on Monday, March 25 while playing golf at the Kern Valley Golf Course and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kern Valley Hospital.


Reither was born on December 6, 1919 in Fullerton, California. He was a frequent visitor to the Kern Valley and he and Mrs. Reither were married here by Ardis Walker during the time Walker served as Justice of the Peace. The Reithers retired to the Valley six months ago and were the owners of Sierra Traller Lodge, 448 Rio Vista Drive, Kernville.


He is survived by the widow, Betty Jane; his mother, Ella of Santa Ana; two sons, Gary of Santa Ana and David of Fullerton; and three grand- children. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Forrest F. Bulleit


Graveside services were held at the Kern Valley District Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 in memory of Forrest F. Bulleit, 82, who passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on March 24. Rev. Arthur Lewis, officiat- ed at the service, interment followed the ceremony.


Bulleit was born on March 4, 1892 in Corydon, Indiana and was a retired accountant employed by the Ford Motor Company in Long Beach for 40 years. He and his wife, Helen were managers of Camp James in Kern- ville at the time of his death. He was a member of the Kern Valley Masonic Lodge.


He is survived by the widow, Helen; five sons, Robert Bulleit of Alhambra, Donald Bulleit of Tustin, Cecil, Gro- ver and William Clark all of Long Beach: three daughters, Anna Rush of La Habra, Patricia Biber of Long Beach and Carolyn Hinton of Long Beach; and five grandchildren. In lleu of flowers the tamily of the deceased requests donations be made to the Heart Monitor Fund at the Kern Valley Hospital.


Margaret B. Parkinson


Rosary services were said at St. Jude's Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 26 in memory of Margaret Bridget Parkinson, 67, who passed away on March 24 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Father Murphy conducted both the Rosary Mass and the chapel services at St. Jude's on Wednesday, March 27 at 10 a.m. Interment followed in the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Mrs. Parkinson was born in Ta- coma, Washington on August 2, 1906 and lived in California for 65 years. She had resided in Wofford Heights for the past four years and was a member of the 55 Plus Club and the Dam Dancers.


She is survived by the widower, Harry; three sons, Donald of South Lake, Robert of lake wood. James of Huntington Beach; three brothers, Bob Gibson and Kenneth Gibson of Lawndale and James Gibson of Fountain Valley; two sisters, Bernice Dresser of Huntington Beach and Lillian Ward of Capistrano; and nine grandchildren.


Phoebe Link


Services will be held at St. Jude's Catholic Church on Friday, March 29 at 10 a.m. for Mrs. Phoebe Link, 69, who died on Tuesday, March 26 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield. Father Murphy will officiate at the memorial service and interment will follow at the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Mrs. Link was born on June 15, 1904 in Minnesota and had been a realtor in the Kern River Valley for the last 25 years. She had lived in California for 39 years and was a member of the Havilah Centennial Group.


She is survived by four brothers: Eugene Moffatt of Seattle, Leonard Moffatt of Portland, Lawrence Mof- fatt of Portland, Charles Moffatt of Orinda, California; one sister, Mary Catherine White of Bakersfield; and many nieces and nephews.


Donations in honor of the deceased are being accepted by the Havilah Centennial Group of which she was an active member. Dorothy F. Jones


Memorial services were held on Monday, April 8 to 10:30 a.m. In the Valley Mortuary Chapel In Lake Isabella for Dorothy Fay Jones, 54, who passed away at Physclans Hos- pital In Bakersfield on April 4. Rev. Oren Ice officiated at the service and Interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery In Wofford Heights.


Dorothy was born on February 10, 1920 In Durante, Oklahoma. She had lived In California for 20 years and in the Kern Valley for the past 11 years. She was a staunch supporter of the youth of the Valley and was actively involved in Little League and the Bronc Boosters Club. She was em- ployed by the Kernville School Dist- rict for a time, and made many contributions to the young peoples athletic programs.


She is survived by four sons - Billy Gene Jones of Ft. Worth, Texas, Capt. Benny Allen Parker of Kansas, and Kenneth and Richard Jones of Lake Isabella; two daughters - Sharon Miles of Ft. Worth, Texas and Terri Jones of Lake Isabella; four brothers - Buster Terry of Ft. Worth, Lewis Terry of Cleburne, Texas, William Terry of Anchorage, Alaska, Bobby Terry of Amarillo, Texas; five sisters ยท Pauline Houghton of Austin, Texas, Ila Cunningham of Crowley, Mae Thomas of Downey, Maurine Doak of Las Vegas, Nell Tubbs of Ft. Worth; one grandson, David Mark Miles of Ft. Worth and two granddaughters, Maurine and Bonita Parker of Kan- sas.

Services were held on Monday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Philetus Philologus Mc- Gee, 87, of 2128 Commercial Street in Lake Isabella. Rev. Willard Vanfos- sen officiated and interment was April 9 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield.


McGee was born on October 19, 1886 In Marietta, Georgia and he passed away on April 8 at the Kern Valley Hospital. He had lived in Lake Isabella for 31/2 years and in the state for the last 52 years. He is survived by his widow. Leopoldine.

Marie Jordan


Services will be held in the Valley Mortuary Chapel at 2 p.m. on Thurs- day, April 11 (today) in memory of Marle Catherine Jordan, 78, who passed away on April 8 at Kern General Hospital In Bakersfield. She had been residing at the Pioneer Guest Home In Bakersfield. Following chapel services, Interment will be at the Kern Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Helghts.


Mrs. Jordan was born In Ilinios on September 27, 1895 and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 34 years. Until her change of residence she had been a member of the local chapter of the Lady Elks.


She Is survived by two sons, Joseph Grace of San Diego and Patrick Grace of El Cajon; fifteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.


Dorothy Chemnitzer


Memorial services were read for Dorothy L. Chemnitzer, 59, of Wofford Heights in the Valley Mortuary Chap- el on Wednesday, April 10 at 10 a.m. Christian Science Church conducted the ceremony and Interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Mrs. Chemnitzer was born in Avila, California and was a retired police- woman with the Redondo Beach Police Department. She had been a resident of the Oak Knolls section of Wofford Heights until the time of her death on April 8. Mrs. Chemnitzer was Instrumental in the organization of the local chapter of Order of Eastern Star and served two terms as Worthy Matron. She Is Past Matron of the Carnation chapter of Order of Eastern Star in Long Beach.


She is survived by the widower, Henry; one sister, Madeline Alsop of Kernville and her mother, Mrs. Minnie Caifa of Long Beach.


Marie A. Gehersky


Services were held at Valley Mor- tuary Chapel on Wednesday, April 10 at 1 p.m. for Marle Alvina Gehersky, 83, who died on April 8 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Services were con- ducted by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Mrs. Gehersky was born on July 13, 1890 In North Dakota and she had been a resident of Squirrel Valley for the past year.


She is survived by one son; Dale of Pico Rivers; three daughters, Urba Almany of Lake Isabella, June Moore of Shell Beach, Betty Emigh of Long Beach. Two brothers - Leonard Hie- bert of Napa, John Hiebert of Geor- gia; three sisters - Emma Schwarz of Orange, Betty Wedel fo Los Angeles, Sally Goset of Kelso, Washington; 13 grandchildren and 7 great grand- children.


Herbert M. Stains


Graveside services were held on Tuesday, April 9 at the Kern Valley District Cemetery for Herbert Mat- lock Stains, 45, of Sylmar and Kern- ville, who was killed In an airplane accident in San Fernando on April 5.


Officers of the San Fernando Elks Lodge No. 1539 conducted services for Stains on Monday, April 8 at 8 p.m. at the Noble Morturary Chapel In San Fernando. He was maintenance fore- man for Olive View Hospital in Sylmar at the time of his death.


Stains will be remembered by Kern Valley Boy Scouts for his outstanding organization of the Fly-In in April, 1973 which In turn provided funds towards their trip to the National Jamboree.


He is survived by three sons; Russell, Michael and Herbert 11, of Sylmar; three brothers - Aubrey L. Stains, Emmett F. Stains and Bland Harris; one sister - Jeanne G. Mallman; his mother, Marguerite Harris; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey L. Stains formerly of Oakland now residents of Kernville.

Annie Robertson


Services were held at the Weldon Methodist Church on Friday, April 19 at 11 a.m. in memory of Annie Robertson, 88, one of the true pioneer women of the South Fork Country, who passed away on April 14 Long Beach. Rev. Mark Stahnke, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated at the ceremony and interment followed in the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Annie Robertson came to Weldon from Scotland with her parents, David and Rebecca Alexander, In 1896. She grew up in a ranching family and married Jim Robertson in 1905. She lived within one mile of Weldon until she moved to Long Beach last year to be near her daughter, Evelyn. In the early years, Jim and Annie Robertson donated the land for the South Fork Recreation Club, the same land on which the South Fork Womans Club now stands.


Mrs. Robertson was an active member of the Weldon Methodist Church, the South Fork Woman's Club and an honorary member of the Rebeccas and the Kern County Cow- belles.


She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Holster of Long Beach; two grandchildren and five great grand- children.


Jess J. Kidwell


Rosary will be said on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great, Telegraph Road, Whittler in memory of Jess J. Kidwell, 66, who passed away on April 23 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 with Father Ruddy officiating at both ceremonies. Interment will follow at Olive Lawn Cemetery in La Mirada.


Kidwell was a resident of Bodfish for the past three years and retired plant manager of American Molasses Company of Whittier. where he was employed for 28 years. He was born on October 10, 1907 in Martin County, Indiana.


He is survived by the widow, Jackie of Bodfish; two brothers, Curtis J. Kidwell of Indiana and W. E. Kidwell of Parker, Arizona; and two sisters, Mary Madden of Indiana and Lettie Truelove of Southgate. Arrangements by Utter Mckinley Mortuary of Downey.


Robert Brazeau


Services were held at the valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella on Tuesday, April 23 at 10 a.m. for Robert Joseph Brazeau, 51, of John- sondale who died Friday, April 19 as the result of an autombile accident. The son of the deceased, Rev. Robert Brazeau Jr., minister of Music and Evangelism of the First Presbyterian Church of Visalia, officiated at the memorial ceremony. Interment fol- lowed in the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Brazeau, better known as "Fren- chy" was employed by the J. J. Hearn Logging Company in Johnsondale. He had lived at 249 Main Street in Johnsondale for seven years, and was born on September 18, 1922 in The Dells, Oregon. Brazeau was a mem- ber of the Sidewalk CB Club and the Banjo Club of Fresno.


He is survived by the widow, Maxine of Johnsondale; four sons, Robert Jr. of Visalla, John of San Francisco, James of Tustin and Wilfred John 111 of Johnsondale; two daughters, Suzanne Carr of Carson City, Nevada and Barbara McIntosh of Johnsondale; one brother Wilfred John 11 of New York; his mother, Viola Brazeau of Fresno and four grandchildren.

Geoffrey R. Lawes


Services were held in the sanctuary of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kernville on Friday, April 26 in memory of Geoffrey Lawes, 62, who passed away at his Kernville home on Tuesday, April 23. Rev. Louis Gerdes officiated at the ceremony and inter- ment followed at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Lawes was born on June 21, 1911 in Toronto, Canada, but lived most of his life in Santa Monica. He was graduat- ed from Santa Monica High School in 1930 and was employed for 33 years by the McDonald-Douglas Co. He retired in 1973 and moved to the Kern Valley. He is survived by the widow, Ouida of Kernville.


Pallbearers were: Bill Allred, Rob- ert Antolic, Ralph Smith, Bill Chase, Willis Jackson and Jim Wilson. Ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.


Otis F. Clark


Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Otis Faulkner Clark, 59, of Bodfish who was killed in an airplane crash. Date of death is officially listed as May 2. President Emil Brown of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints in Mt. Mesa will conduct the chapel services assisted by Robert Whitlock and Lorin Mortenson. The soloist will be Marcla Merta, accompanied by Mrs. Geri Peacock. Interment will follow at the Kern River Valley District. The grave will be dedicated by George Hamilton.


Clark was born on February 16, 1915 in Nebraska and had been a resident of the state of California for 25 years. He was employed as a truck driver by Sequoia Logging Company in John- sondale at the time of his death.


Clark is survived by the widow, Irene of Canal Street in Bodfish; two sons, Robert of Redding and Edward of Anderson; two daughters, Diana Griffin of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Sylvia of Bodfish; two brothers, Frank Clark of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Willard Clark of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one sister, Emma Cooksey of Oakland; and nine grandchildren.


Pallbearers will be Glen Colby, Jim Hearn, Henry Ramey, Bob Clark, Ed Clark, Lloyd Osborn and honorary pallbearers will be Odell Henderson and Roger Alves. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Dale Bennett


Graveside services were held at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 6 for Jennings Dale Bennett, 38, of Weldon. Bennett was killed in an airplane crash near Johnsondale, date of death Is officially listed as May 2. Rev. Fred Cottriel, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church of Bakersfield officiated at the service assisted by Rev. Ed McCallle, pastor of the Wofford Heights Assem- by of God Church.


Bennett was born on December 20, 1935 in Yucaipa and operated the Kern Valley Saw Shop in Lake Isabella for the past two years. He resided on Kelso Creek Road in Weldon.


He is survived by the widow, Jeltje; one son, Jennings William Bennett; one brother, Ronald of Bodfish; one sister, Dorothy Gowen of Mississippi; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jennings Bennett of Yucaipa. Ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.

Bianca Gia


Graveside rites were held at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14 for Blanca Gia, 79, who passed away on May 11 at the Country Cottage Convalescent Hospital in Wasco. Ser- vices were conducted by Mtnsr. Renner of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Wofford Heights.


Mrs. Gia was born on December 25, 1894 in Italy and she had llved in California for 55 years. She was a resident of the Kern Valley for 15 years.


She is survived by her husband, Ezlo of Bodfish; two sons, Paul of Bodfish and Pete of Torrance; one daughter, Minnie Mullanario of Sal- Inas; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Arrangements by Val- ley Mortuary.

Memorial services were held at the Valley Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, May 14 at 2 p.m. for Mary Walder Coovert, 86, who passed away on May 11 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Rev. Willard Vanfossen, pastor of the Kernville United Methodist Church, officiated at the ceremony. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery.


Mrs. Coovert was born on October 7, 1887 in Park River, Illinois. She had lived in California for 52 years and In the Kern River Valley for 5 years.


She is survived by her husband, Dave of Wofford Heights; one son, Elmo R. Coovert of Wofford Helghts; one sister, Ruby Smith of Salinas; 2 grandchildren and 2 great grand- children.


Ernest A. Worrell


Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 13 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Ernest Alvin Worrell, 66, who died May 9 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Dr. Frank Bentley of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella officiated at the cerem- ony and inurnment followed at Ingle- wood Park In Inglewood.


Mr. Worrell was born In Canada on May 7, 1908 and moved to California 40 years ago. He was a retired painter and had been employed by the Jack Bryant Co. In Los Angeles until he came to the Kern Valley 4 years ago.


He is survived by the widow, Inez of Wofford Heights; one daughter, Evel- yn Laurence of Los Angeles and two grandchildren.

Richard D. Cole


Richard D. Cole, 69, died at his home in Kernville on May 19. He was born in Nebraska In 1904. He has lived In California since 1937. His survivors are his wife and friend, H. Faye Cole of 144 Mountain Drive In Kernville; his daughter and friend, R. R. Coulmbe; his son and friend H. T. Cole; and two grandsons and friends, B. L. Cole and R. D. Cole, all living in California. Interment was at Kern River Valley District Cemetery on Wednesday, May 22 at 2 p.m. by Valley Mortuary.


LeRoy Strickland


Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 23 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for LeRoy Strick- land. 77, who died on May 20 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Rev. Mark Stahnke, pastor of the Weldon Meth- odist Church and the Highland Cha- pel, will officiate at the service. Private graveside services will be held at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery.


Mr. Strickland was born on April 24, 1897 in Oceanville, New Jersey. He had lived in California for 32 years and was a retired paint foreman for the W. S. Kline Paint Company in Los Angeles. He resided at 2900 Steenson Avenue in Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his widow, Sarah; two sons, LeRoy Jr. of Van Nuys and Joseph of Carson City, Nevada; one sister, Essie Steelman of Baltimore, Maryland; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Mildred D. Pettit, 72, who passed away on May 20 at the Parkview Real Convalescent Hospital in Bakersfield. Dr. Frank Bently officiated at the service and Interment followed at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery.


Mrs. Pettit was born on April 4, 1902 in West Virginia. She had lived in California for 33 years and in the Kern River Valley for the past 13 years.


She is survived by her son, Ira Rickman of Lake Isabella and one daughter, Marie Rickman of Wofford Heights. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Emma Reid


Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Highland Chapel in Lake Isabella for Emma Margaret Reid, 88, Isabella, who died May 23 in a Bakersfield convalescent hospital. Elder Gien Burton will officiate and interment will follow in the Kernville Cemetery. She was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and lived in the Kernville area for 39 years.


Pallbearers will be Ivan Foote, Eddie Matz, Hal Glose, Bill Dolloff, Bill Duncan and Dick Langford. Doughty-Calhon-O'-Meara Mortuary directors.


John P. Hinkey


Graveside services were held on Monday, May 20 at the Old Kernville Cemetery in memory of John Paul Hinkey, 55, who passed away in the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles on May 16. Officials of the Kern River Valley B.P.O.E. No. 2358 officiated at the ceremony.


Hinkey was born in Cokeville, Wyoming in 1919. He had been a long time resident of the Kern River Valley and was the former owner of The Hut in Kernville.


He is survived by the widow, Georgia; two sons, Rex and Theo- dore; one daughter, Barbara Steph- ens; two brothers, Ted and Dennis; two sisters, Peggy Jackson and Patricia McPhearson and seven grandchildren.

Lenore Malouf, 57, 3309 Fillmore, Bakersfield, died June 10 following an extended illness. The deceased is the mother of CHP officer Jim Malouf. Greenlawn Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Maude J. Brewer, 83, of 1468 Calle Colina, Thousand Oaks, died Monday morning at a local hospital after a brief illness.


She was born March 21, 1891 in Canada. She had been a resident of The Conejo for the past six weeks, moving here from Lake Isabella. She was a retired executive secretary for the Department of Defense.


She is survived by a son, Jameson Brewer of Thousand Oaks; two grand- children; and three great-grandchi !- dren.


Burial will take place in the Sentinel Butte Cemetery, Beach, North Da- kota. Griffin Brothers Funeral Chapel in Thousand Oaks is in charge of the arrangements.

Erica Lotto Kraemer, 59, passed away June 19, at the Kern Valley Hospital. She was born in Germany, Feb. 2, 1915 and is survived by her husband, August. Arrangements for direct cremation were by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.


Walter C. Smith


Walter C. Smith, 72, died at his home June 20 at Kelso Valley Rd., Weldon. Smith was a retired foreman at Kernville Honor Farm.


Graveside services were held Tues- day, June 25 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield with Rev. Catrell officiating.


Survivors include his wife, Rosella, a son, Cecil, Lake Isabella; daughter, Lola Sabolini, Bakersfield; one bro- ther, Sam, Bakersfield; two sisters, Elsie Smith, Bakersfield and Tillie Brumfield, Glosker, Miss .; and four grandchildren. Smith was born June 20, 1902.

Services were held in the First Baptist Church at Lake Isabella Monday at 2 p.m. for James L. Thomas, 78, who died June 27 In a Mountain Mesa hospital. The Rev. R. Dale Brown will officiate. Mr. Thomas was born in Missouri and had resided in Kern County 16 years. He is survived by the widow, Melba, Lake Isabella; daughter, Bea Thomas of Detriot; son, James Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mich .; 4 brothers, Steve, Roy and Guy Thomas and Ollis Snyder of Indiana. Pallbearers were James Ash, Jerry Hubble, Larry Evans, Steve Manley, Norman Havertson and Bill Denning. Interment was in the Kernville District Cemetery. Hillcrest Mortuary.


George Hitchcock


George Arson Hitchcock, 68, died July 2, 1974.


Born in Cookeville, Tennessee, March 22, 1906, he moved to California in 1941, and to the valley in 1968. He was a retired Security guard from Standard Oil of California, at El Segundo. Hitchcock was active in the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, and was a chairman in the American Baptist Men's Fellowship there.


He is survived by a wife, Mattie, of Wofford Heights; a brother, Jim Hitchcock of Watsonville, California; 2 sons, Clifford of Rolling Hills, Callfornia and Kenneth of Lake Isabella; a daughter, Georgia Cagle of Anaheiin. A step-mother, Naomi Howell of Cookeville, Tennessee. 12 grandchildren and six great-grand- children.


Darrell Davis


Darrell J. Davis, 72, 2029 Rainbow Drive, Lake Isabella, dled July 8 in Bakersfield. Davis was born in Neb- raska on May 10, 1902.


He is survived by his wife, Frances E. Davis, and two nieces. Davis belonged to the Pressman's Club and was a life member of the National Rifle Assoc.


Interment was held Wednesday, July 10 at 11 a.m. with graveside services at Kern River Valley District Cemetery. Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella, was in charge of arrange- ments.


Julian R. Kinney


Julian R. Kinney, 89, of 201 North Drive, Bodfish, passed away July 20 at Kern Valley Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Ada; a daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Armenta, Montebello; sons James of Lakewood, and Chris- topher of Bodfish; a sister, Lee Hayden of Panorama City; and two brothers, Lawrence of Glendora, and Phillip of Van Nuys.


Kinney retired in 1971 from Sou- thern Pacific Railroad after 34 years as a claim inspector. He had resided in the valley since 1972.
