Son Of Kern Valley-ites Feared Drowned
Gary Lee Wilson of Napa was presumed drowned after his 13-foot sailboat capsized in choppy waters and heavy winds on Lake Berryessa. The 26-year-old man was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Darle Wilson, owners of Whispering Pines Lodge In Kernville.
According to salling companion, Thomas Stevenson, the craft capsized about 2 p.m. March 26. Stevenson said he managed to right the boat and threw a life cushion to Wilson, who was still in the water, but after turning the boat around, Wilson had vanished.
Sheriff's deputies and rangers searched the cove east of Spanish Fiat and surrounding area until nightfall and continued the search through the following Monday. Darle Wilson has made a personal search for his son's body, but to date efforts have been futile. Waters in the cove are an estimated 120 feet deep.
Wilson was a ranger with California Division of Forestry the past five years, stationed in Napa this past year. He was a frequent visitor in the Kern River Valley and had many friends and acquaintances here.
If verified, the mishap will be the first drowning Incident at Berryessa this year.
