OBITUARY
Alvin K. Winslow
The many friends of Alvin K. (Slim) Winslow were saddened to learn of his death on Sunday, March 25, 1973 at Ridgecrest Community Hospital.
He was born in Ware, Mass., in 1902. As a young man, he joined the Navy, serrving from 1919 to 1921. He had a tour of duty on the Battleship Texas and was a 10-point veteran. Settling in the Kernville area, he became an expert horseman, riding in rodeos and learning ranch work. Married to Sylvia Canning in 1936, the couple began to develop the 640 acres of rugged mountain land which Slim had homesteaded in Bodfish Canyon.
Slim continued his outdoor active life, ranching and stunt riding for the many western motion pictures made in the Kernville area, including the one titled "Wells Fargo." He was an early member of the Screen Actors Guild.
When Sylvia's oil paintings began to be recognized, Slim dedicated most of his time to furthering her career as an artist. He became an expert guide on their many sketching trips and a talented frame maker in addition to maintaining the ranch. In 1960, after Sylvia had a serious illness from paint poisoning, the Winslows, with daugh- ter Susan, then age 12, moved to China Lake. Slim, who had learned the machinists trade while in the Navy, worked first in the Public Works Department, then at the Salt Wells Pilot Plant. He transferred to the Engineering Department in 1964 and worked there until his retirement in 1985.
The exploration and sketching tripa took on a new dimension when Slim became a pilot, trading 20 acres of homestead for an Aercoupe. Desert canyons, dry lakes and mountains would be scouted from the air followed by ground expeditions in their faithful jeep, "Little Pete."
As an early and reliable member of the Civil Air Patrol, Siim served for seven years, scouring the desert and mountains on many rescue missions.
When the Maturango Museum was In the development stage, his willing- ness and skill with tools and materials was of great help in creating the structures for exhibits and displays in record time. Slim was awarded a life membership in the Museum in 1964 for his valued contributions.
Since retirement, the Winslows had for several years a summer home near Durango, Colorado. They re- turned to the Indian Wells Valley every winter to see and visit with their friends. Slim is survived by his wife, Sylvia and daughter Susan who lives in Black Canyon, Arizona.
