OBITUARY


Rilly A. Hamilton


Rilly Ann Hamilton, 39, died July 23 from injuries receives in an auto accident last May in the Kern River Valley. Mrs. Hamilton, Kernville, died in Memorial Hospital, Bakers- field.


She is survived by her husband, Deon, a daughter, 17 and two sons, ages 13 and 11.


Services were conducted Monday, July 29. Interment was at Valley Cemetery with Valley Mortuary in charge of arrangements.


William E. Erickson


Former resident of the Kern Valley William Edwin Erickson died last Friday In Harbor City at the age of 66. Erickson was born in North Dakota on Jan. 12, 1908.


He is survived by his wife Evelyn, a son, Eugene of Lomita, a step - daughter, Eleanor McMinn of Wash- ington, a brother and two grand- children.


Services were held Tuesday at Gamby Mortuary in Lomita.


Sylvester B. Reynar


Long time Kernville resident, Syl- vester B. Reynar, passed away on Aug. 3 in Kern Valley Hospital at the age of 78. Reynar, a retired scenic painter for Warner Brothers Studio, who lived at 32 Burlando Rd., Kernville, was a resident of the valley for the past 17 years. Born in Chicago on Oct. 22, 1895, Reynar had lived in Callfornia for the past 58 years.


He is survived by his wife Kathryn, and a son, Benson Reynar, III. Sylvester was a member of Elks Lodge No. 99 and VFW Post 7665 in the valley


Graveside services were held yes- terday, Wednesday, Aug. 7 at Kern Valley Cemetery by Rev. Myron Goodyear.


Milton P. Alpheus


Milton Peck Alpheus, 10 year resident of the valley, died July 31 at Hilltop Convalescent Hospital in Ba- kersfield at the age of 84.


He Is survived by his wife Leona of 130 Cactus St., Lake Isabella, a son, Charles, of Honolulu and a daughter, Louise Kuziari, of San Fernando. He had been a California resident for 30 years.


No services were held for Alpheus who was born in New York on Sept. 2, 1889. He was interred on Wednesday, Aug. 7 in Kern Valley Cemetery.


Kenneth H. Gorseth


Kenneth Howard Gorseth passed away last Sunday, Aug. 5 at Kern Valley Hospital at age 59. Gorseth, who resided at 2802 Steensen St., Lake Isabella, was born July 25, 1914 in Wall, South Dakota. He had been a resident of the valley for three years.


Gorseth is survived by his wife Verna, two sons, Kenneth Lee and Ronald Ray, both of Lakewood, two brothers, Lowell and James and one sister, Berniece Hase, all of Min- neapolis and six grandchildren.


Services will be held tomorrow, Aug. 9, at 1 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Kern Valley Cemetery.

Joan Cecile Peart


Joan Cecile Peart, 22, Lake Isa- bella, died August 7, 1974 in Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield, CA. Born Au- gust 21, 1952 in Seattle, Washington, Joan was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Peart, Lake Isabella.


Besides her parents, Joan is sur- vived by three sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Moeller, Los Angeles; Mrs. Anna Odahara, Alea, Hawaii, and Mrs. Helen Holmes, Bishop, CA; one brother, John Peart, Lake Isabella, and a grandmother, Mrs. Anna Betts, Weaverville, CA.


Services were conducted Friday, Aug. 9 at Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella, with the Rev. Myron Goodyear, Kernville United Methodist Church officiating.


Interment was at Weaverville Ce- metery, In Weaverville, CA.


Sam Smith


Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at the Kern Valley District Cemetery in memory of Sam Smith, 68, who passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on August 11. Rev. Hugh Power, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, officiated at the ceremony.


Smith was born in Arkansas on October 6,,1905. He had lived in California for 44 years and was a retired machine builder employed by Weston Hydraulics in Van Nuys. Smith lived at the Jesse James Trailer Park In Wofford Heights. He was a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past year, and a member of the Masonic Lodge.


He is survived by the widow, Elizabeth; two sons, Glenn of Reeds- ville, Georgia and Richard Stephens of Manhattan Beach; one daughter, Barbara Wilds of Reedsville, Geor- gia; two sisters, Ruth Mayes of Saugus and Imogene Westerfield of Burbank; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Verna M. Callaway


Memorial services were held at the Greenlawn Mortuary Chapel in Ba- kersfield at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 for Verna Martha Callaway, 69, who died in a Bakersfield hospital on August 1. Rev. D.V.C. Black, pastor of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Bakersfield officiated at the services. Interment followed in Greenlawn Cemetery


Mrs. Callaway was born on July 10, 1905 in Colorado. She came to California 54 years ago and had lived in Kern County for 35 years. At the time of her death, she resided at 131 Douglas St. In Oildale. For five years, she was employed as a saleslady by Montgomery Ward Co.


She is survived by two daughters, Betty James of Kernville and Donna Walpole of Morro Bay; one sister, Ruby Harwood of Oildale; 14 grand- children and 9 great grandchildren. Arrangements by Greenlawn Mor- tuary.

Clayton L. Adams


Funeral services will be held this Friday at 1 p.m. at Valley Mortuary for Clayton L. Adams, 10 year resident of Wofford Heights, who passed away Monday night at Kern Valley Hospital.


Adams, age 73, was born bh Feb. 11, 1901 In Emporlum, PA. He retired in 1963 after 30 years service with Southern California Edison.


Clayton is survived by his wife Wilma anddaughter Myrtle Briggs of Wofford Melghts."The Adams were due to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary on Sept. 1.


He was a member of the B.P.O.E. in Wofford Heights since the local chapter was formed and was a 28-year member of the organization. He was also a member of the 55 Plus Club locally.


Burial will take place in Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Calif.

Services were held for Mildred L. Johnson on Tuesday at Valley Mor- tuary. Mrs. Johnson, age 64, passed away on Aug. 22 in Bishop. Rev. Mark Stahnke officiated.


Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband Walter, one son, Larry of Manhattan Beach and a brother, Edward Crowell of Los Angeles.


The Johnsons own the Sunset Trailer Park in Lake Isabella. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the 55 Plus Club, Pink Ladies Auxiliary of Kern Valley Hospital and the Kern River Valley Art Association.


James H. Jorgensen


Services will be held for James Hans Jorgensen, 72, tomorrow, Fri- day, Aug. 30, at Valley Mortuary Chapel at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Jeffery Moody and Rulon Scott of the Latter Day Saints Church.


Jorgensen, who came to Wofford Heights 38 years ago, passed away at the Bakersfield Convalescent Hospital on Aug. 26. He was born in Pleasant, Utah on May 24, 1902.


He is survived by his widow, Marie, two daughters, Doris Moody of Bakersfield and Joyce Hutcherson of Covina, a brother, Ramus of Utah and three sisters, Alice Hanson, Helen Tuttle and Lousise Maxwell, all of Utah, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.


Jorgensen, a member of the LDS Church, was a past president of the Wofford Heights Chamber of Com- merce, grand master of the Order of Oddfellows and a director of Kern Mines, Inc. ( Big Blue Mine).

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, September 3 at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery for Irene Ramona Gates, 75, who passed away on August 30 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Rev. Peabody officiated at the ceremony .


Mrs. Gates was born on June 6, 1899 in Crystal Point, Wisconsin. She had lived in California for 52 years and in the Kern River Valley for the last 14 years.


She is survived by one son, George of Walunt Creed; one daughter, Alice of Oxnard; one brother, Ken of North Hollywood and one sister, Hazel of Kernville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.

Services were held Monday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel for Charles F. Dwyer, 74, who died Sept. 5 in Kernville. The officiant was Robert Williams, past master of the Kern River Valley Lodge No. 827 F&A.M.


Dwyer was born in Belle Plane, Iowa and resided in Kern County 41 years. He is survived by his widow Beryl of Kernville; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Tedora, Wofford Heights; 3 grandchildren and 7 great grand- children.


Casket bearers were members of the Kern River Valley Lodge No. 827, F&AM. Interment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield.

Lonny Hurst


Services were held on September 19 at 11 a.m. in the Hillcrest Memorial Chapel for l.onny Hurst, 61, who died September 15 in a Bakersfield hos- pital. Rev. D.V. Black of St. Mark's Methodist Church officiated at the services. Interment followed in the Hillcrest Memorial Park.


Hurst was born on July 6, 1913 in Longmont, Colorado. He served as Battalion Chief of the Kernville station for the Kern County Fire Department for 18 years until his retirement in 1971.


He was a member of the Caledonia Lodge No. 486. F&A.M; Past Patron of the Caledonia Chapter No. 391, Order of Eastern Star: president of Kern County Fire Department Retired Employees, and a veteran of World War II.


Hurst is survived by the widow, Anne of Bakersfield; one son, James Hurst; one daughter Mrs. Connie Herndon and four grandchildren, all of Bakersfield; his mother, Mrs. Ruth Hurst of Lynwood; a sister, Mrs. Eileen Peach of Huntington Beach; and a brother, Donald Hurst of Bellflower. Chester S. "Happy" Lutz, 75, a resident of North Fork Trailer Park passed away on September 10 at the Ridgecrest Community Hospital. Cre- mation was in San Bernardino. He had lived in the Kern Valley for the past 4 years.


Mr. Lutz is survived by the widow, Leola of Kernville; two sons, Richard of Reseda and James of San Carlos; three stepchildren, LeRoy Young of Fair Oaks. Ann Guy of South Pasadena, Doris Young of Eugene, Oregon; two sisters of Seattle, Wash- ington; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.


George A. Fetter


Services were held at the First Baptist Church, Lake Isabella, Tues- day at 1 p.m. for George A. Fetter, 88, who died Sept. 14 in the Kern Valley Hospital. The Rev. Hugh Powers of the First Baptist Church officiated. Mr. Fetter was born in Ohio and resided in the Kernville area for 46 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oddfellows Lodge No. 251 and the Rebekah Lodge No. 365. Mr. Fetter is survived by his wife, Lols; daughter, Eileen Carloss of Tulsa, Okla; 2 stepdaughters, Mrs. Ruth Wrenn of Eden, N.C., Mrs. Helen Finley of Dyer, Ind .; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Interment was in Kernville District Cemetery. Payne & Sons Funeral Home.


Michael Anderson


Graveside services were held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Monday at 9:30 a.m. for Michael E. Anderson, 22, who died Sept. 11 in Bakersfield. Mr. Jack Harney, pastor of the Eastside Christian Church officiated. Mr. An- derson was born in Bakersfield and had resided there all his life. He is survived by his wife, Debi of Bakersfield; mother, Mrs. Maude Havercroft of Bakersfield; 2 brothers, Bradley Anderson, John Havercroft, Bakersfield; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Lofton of Lake Isabella. Lonnie Arnold


Memorial services were held on Friday, September 20 at the Assembly of God Church in Wofford Heights for Lonnie Marie Arnold, 29, who died at the Kern Valley Hospital on Septem- ber 17. Graveside rites at the Kern Valley District Cemetery were direc- ted by Rev. Ed McCallie.


Mrs. Arnold was native of California, born on April 10, 1945. She and her family have lived in the Kern River Valley since 1969 and she was employed by the Onyx Emproium at the time of her death.


She is survived by her husband, Richard; one son, Sean; one daugh- ter. Kimbra Marie Lonnie; one brother, John Taylor of San Diego; one sister, Jaymmie Morgan of Mississippi; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor of Onyx.

Thomas C. Powers


Memorial services will be held on Friday, October 18 at 1 p.m. at the Wofford Heights Foursquare Church for Thomas Charles Powers, 22, who dled as the result of an accident on October 12 near Half Moon Bay in Northern California. Rev. Larry Six and Rev. Richard Magness will officiate in the church rite and at graveside. Interment will be in the Kern River Valley District cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Tommy was born in Bakersfield on December 15, 1951, and lived in the Kern River Valley until he graduated from Kern Valley High School in 1970. He was a 6th generation native, whose family settled here In 1861. Following graduation, Tommy spent 4 years in the United States Navy, much of that time he spent aboard the Kitty Hawk working in the field of flight control. He was discharged in June, 1974. At the time of his death he was employed by Rancho Canada De Verde Inc .. Redwood City


He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Powers of Wofford Heights; three brothers, David, Ken- neth, and Bobby; one sister, Susann, all of Wofford Heights4 his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ada DaMant of Sanger: and his paternal grand- mother, Mrs. Isabelle Powers of Bakersfield.

Marie Jorgensen


Services were held at the Valley Mortuary Chapel at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16 in memory of Marle B. Jorgensen, 68, who died on October 13 at the San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield. President Emil Brown and Jeffrey Moody of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiated at the ceremony. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Mrs. Jorgensen was born December 14, 1905 In Butler, Utah. She had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 38 years. In 1942 she served as Noble Grand of the Kernville Rebekah Lodge and she was at one time president of the South Fork Woman's Club, past president of the Wofford Heights Chamber of Commerce and Improvement Group, and past pres !- dent of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was serving as treasurer of the BPW at the time of her death.


Mrs. Jorgensen was librarian of the Wofford Heights branch of the Kern County Library for 10 years until her retirement.


She is survived by two daughters, Doris Moody of Bakersfield and Joyce Hutcherson of Covina; two brothers, Mark Butler of Utah and Bill Butler of Marysville; three sisters, Llda Sund- quist, Helen Kreasen and Fawn Smith, all of Utah; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.


Pallbearers were Leland Scott, Vernon Blount, Jeff Moody, Jack Wood, Robert Christiansen and Chet Torrow. Honorary pallbearers were Merrel Hight, Waldo Ellis, Clifford Cross, Joe Hall, Larry Paggi, Duke Bloom and Edward Metz.


Geraldine Littlefield


Services were held on September 28 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Chimes in Inglewood for Geraldine L. Little- field, 64. of Panorama Drive in Kernville who passed away on Sep- tember 26 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Interment followed at the Inglewood Cemetery.


Mrs. Littlefield had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past four years. She was born on May 10, 1910 in Missouri, and had lived in the Los Angeles area prior to retiring to the valley. She was an active member of the South Fork Woman's Club and the Kern River Valley Historical Society.


She is survived by the widower, Stanton Littlefield of Kernville: one daughter, Guenn Morrison of Los Angeles; a grandson, Stephen Morri- son and two sisters.

Robert J. Riggs


Services were held on Tuesday, November 5 at 2 p.m. in the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Robert Joseph Riggs, 52, who died on October 31 in Mojave. Rev. Hugh Power, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, officiated and interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Riggs was born in Oregon on March 14, 1922. At the time of his death he was employed by the U.S Borax Co. in Boron as a bulldozer operator.


He is survived by the widow, Joyce, of Lake Isabella; three sons, Gerald and Russell of Lake Isabella, and Gary of Frazier Park; one daughter, Rose Ann Riggs of Wyoming; one sister, Alice Freeman of Oregon; four brothers, Frances of Boston, Everett of Soledad, Jim and Riley of Oregon; and four grandchildren.


Emma Liebel


Memorial services will be held today, Thursday, November 14 at 2 p.m. in the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Emma Liebel, 91, a native of the Kern River Valley. Mrs. Liebel passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on Sunday, November 10. Rev. Mark Stahnke, pastor of the Weldon Methodist Church and the Highland Chapel Methodist Church, will officiate at the ceremony and interment will follow in the old Kern Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Emma Liebel was born in Kelso Valley on May 22, 1883 and lived in the valley until her death. She and her husband, Otto, built their ranch home at the top of Erskine Creek Road, where her youngest son Frank and his family still reside. One of the true pioneer women, Emma bore 12 children and struggled to raise them in the gold mining camps on the Piute Mountain.


She is survived by 10 children; six sons - Frank, Lake Isabella; George, Bodfish; Philip, Los Angeles; Ru- dolph, Bakersfield; Clemmens, I.os Angeles; Theodore, Bakersfield. Four daughters - Caroline Houser, Onyx: Rosa West, Michigan City, Indiana; Mary F.dall. Los Lunas. New Mexico: Barbara Brassfield, Bakersfield: 37 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchild- ren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Frankie B. Baker


Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12 at the Old Kernville District Cemetery in memory of Frankie Bernice Baker, 71, of Kernville, who passed away on November 8 in Bakersfield. The Rev. Morril W. Peabody officiated at the services.


Mrs. Baker was born in Bakersfield and lived all of her life in Kern County. She is survived by a son, Russell Baker; one daughter, Mrs. June Sherman, both of Bakersfield: two sisters, Mrs. Grace Garland of Bakersfield and Mrs. Nellie Aspittle of Ridgecrest; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. C. L. Gray


Services were held on Wednesday, November 20 at 2 p.m. in the Valley Mortuary Chapel in memory of C.I .. Gray, Kilbreth Street, Bodfish, who passed away on November 16 at the City of Hope in Duarte, California. Rev. Archie Miller, pastor of the Pentacostal Church of God, and members of the B.P.O.E. No. 2358 officiated at the chapel and graveside services. Interment was at Kern River Valley District Cemetery.


Gray was born October 2, 1913 in Gainesville, Texas. Best known to his friends as "Charlie," C.L. was a retired dry cleaning operator. He was last employed by Duds and Suds in Kernville. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and famous in valley circles for his talents as a musician. He organized the Gray Brothers Western Band. Gray was a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 8 years and of the state for 31 years.


He is survived by the widow. Delores: his mother, Minnie Ola Gray of Bakersfield: four brothers, Glenn C. Gray of Napa, Charles Gray of Lake Isabella, Woodrow Gray of Oklahoma City, and William Gray of Lake Isabella.


Gladys Greene


Private services were held at the Valley Mortuary Chapel on November 19 for Gladys R. Greene, 73, of 1843 Anchorage Street, Wofford Heights, who died on November 18 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Rev. Morrill Pea- body, pastor of the Episcopal Mission, officiated at the service. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery.


She is survived by her husband, John; one son, James I .. of Tuscon, Arizona; one daughter, Marilyn Lease of Long Beach; two sisters, Mar- guerite Ostrander of Stockton, and Laura Castleton of Oakland; and seven grandchildren.


Willard Dockendorf


Graveside services were observed at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 23 at the Desert Memorial Park in Ridgecrest in memory of Willard Josepl: Dockendorf, 53, of Kem Street in Lake Isabella. Rev. Cal Torrance officiated at the service.


Mr. Dockendorf was born on February 11, 1921 in Clucago Illinois, and he passed away on November 21 at Kein General Hospital in Bakers- field. He had lived in Kern County for 26 years and retired in 1964 as a Supply Clerk for the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake.


He is survived by four daughters; Rosemarie Tingle of Loma Linda, Fifi Rose lee of Placentia, Susan Davoust and Phyliss Dockendorf both of Chicago; one brother, Edward Dock- endorf of Indiana; one sister, Mrs. Arlene Prescott of Ridgecrest: and threeu grandchildren. Services will be held today, Thurs- day, December 5 at the Inglewood Mortuary in memory of James Carl Wrobel, 49, of Wofford Heights who died on December 1 at Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield. Christian Science readers will officiate at the chapel service and interment will follow in Inglewood Cemetery.


Wrobel was horn on January 8, 1925. He moved to the Kern River Valley in May after retiring from the Los Angeles Police force. He was member of the Kern River Valley B.P.O.E. No. 2358 and the American Legion Post No. 188 in Inglewood.


He is survived by the widow, Jerrie; one daughter, Patricia Schroeder of Inglewood; his aunt, Mrs. Louella McDonnell and a cousin, Lawrence Wrobel, hoth of Paradise, California. Arrangements by the Inglewood Mor- tuary.


Mervin W. Mitterwallner


Services were held at St. Anthony's Episcopal Church in La Mesa on Wednesday, December 4 for Mervin W. "Bubbles" Mitterwallner, 77, who dled on Sunday, December 1 at a convalescent home in El Cajon. "Bubbles" will be remembered in the Kern Valley as an associate of the late Jack Ewing. He greeted friends from the same seat near the door for nearly 10 years until he moved out of the area. Notice of his death was headlined in newspapers in Cham- pagne, Illinois where "Bubbles" was a legend in the football world as a teammate of Red Grange. He had no survivors in the Kern Valley, but many devoted friends.


Carl Weber


Graveside services were held in Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 2 In memory of Carl A. Weber, 72, of Wofford Heights who died on Novem- her 27.


Weber was born In Junietta, Neh- raska In 1902 and later moved to Chicago where he worked for Reming- ton Cash Register Co. He came to Kern County 30 years ago and began servicing coln operated machines in Ridgecrest. In 1951 he established the Weber Amusement Company In the Kern River Valley. He served as president of the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce for two years and was one of the pioneers in establishing the Kern Valley Golf Course and the annual Whiskey Flat Days celebration, among his many other civic activities.


He Is survived hy the widow, Eileen; two stepsons, Harry Gloeck- ner of Santa Maria and Ray Gloeck- ner of Glendora; three daughters, Virginia Lilly of La Mirada, Barbara Short of Oceanside, Nancy Green of Laguna Beach; one stepdaughter, Barbara Underwood of Glendora; two hrothers, John of Chicago and George of Nebraska; 26 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Arrangements hy Hopson Mortuary.


Lela Arrington


Services will be held on Thursday, December 5 at 11 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Lela Arrington, 64, who passed away December 2 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Interment will be at Kern Valley Cemetery. Mrs. Arrington was horn on March 6, 1910 in Oklahoma.


She is survived by her husband, Burl; two sons, James Pigg of Boise, Idaho, and Frank Pigg of Downey; one daughter, Ruth, of Long Beach; two grandchildren and one great . grandchild.
