Benjamin Shortridge


Memorial services will be held at the Valley Mortuary Chapel today, August 23 at 11 a.m. for Benjamin Franklin Shortridge, 48, who died at the Kern Valley Hospital on August 17. Rev. Richard Magness will officiate at the ceremony, interment will follow at the Kern Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Shortridge was born in Covington, Louisana on October 18, 1924. He was the owner-operator of Shady Acres Motel In Wofford Heights and mana- ger of the Rustic Kitchen Restaurant. He had lived in the Kern River Valley for the past two years and In California for 24 years. He was a member of the Kern River Valley B.P.O.E. No. 2358.


He is survived by the widow, Arline; one daughter, Audrey; one sister, Margaret of Ohio; two brothers, Samuel and Robert of Florida.


Pallbearers will be Cliff Lyons, Jerry Click, Bob Jones, Harry Rogers, Paul Gleming, Art Wine- miller and Jerry Hawks.

James Lyons


Burial services were conducted at the Kern Valley District Cemetery on August 22 for James Williams Lyons, 63, who died on August 14 at his home In Shady Lane Trailer Park. He was born on September 30, 1909. There is no known next of kin. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Charles Dahm


Charles August Dahm, 67, Weldon, died in the Kern Valley Hospital on August 11th.


Born In Freeport, Illinois, he was a retired mechanic from Morris Indust- ries In Pacoima. He has been a resident of the Valley for six months.


Mr. Dahm is survived by his wife, Marian; three sons, George of Illinois, Duane of Simi and Wayne of Burbank; and three daughters, Valene and Shirley Dahm of Simi and Milly Johnson of Illinois and twelve grand- children; five sisters, Gertrude Icott, West Chicago, Margaret Scott, Bre- men, Ind., Helen Wiegman, Delores Ontges and Lois Witt of Freeport, Ill.


Services were held August 15th at the graveside, Kern Valley Cemetery, with the Rec. Willard Vanfossen officiating.


Lela Martin


Graveside services will be conduct- ed on Friday, August 24 at 2 p.m. at Floral Memorial Park In Selma, California In memory of Lela Myrtle Martin, 84, who passed away on August 20 at the Beverly Manor Guest Home in Bakersfield. The Rev. R. A. Crawford will officiate.


She was born on December 17, 1888 in Arkansas, she lived in California for the last 42 years and in the Kern River Valley for 315 years.


Mrs. Martin is survived by one son, Raymond of Fresno; four daughters, Ruby Low of Bodfish, June Hanes of Bakersfield, Pearl Stallard of Keys, Oklahoma, and Elna Runha of Gar- dena; two sisters, Mae Lee of Keys, Oklahoma, and Ida McCallie of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. Alfred W. Cockran


Graveside services were held on Saturday, August 25 at 10 a.m. at the Kern Valley District Cemetery In memory of Alfred Walter Cockran, 85, of Mt. Mesa. He died of natural causes at the Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield on August 22. Rev. Dale Brown, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella officiated at the services. Interment followed.


Cockran was a retired carpenter, he had lived in California for 28 years and in the Kern River Valley for the past three years. He was born on November 4, 1907 In Kansas City, Missouri.


He was a member of the Sidewalk C.B. Club in the Kern Valley and went by the code name of "Irish". Arrange- ments by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.


Shirley Phillips


Services were held at the Hillcrest Mortuary in Bakersfield on August 24 for Shirley (Chuck) Phillips who died at his Kernville home on August 21. Rev. Louis Gerdes, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kernville officiated at the services. Interment followed at the Hillcrest Memorial Park.


Phillips was born in Bakersfield but spent most of his life In the Kern River Valley.


He Is survived by the widow, Mary; his mother, Jessie Olson of Wofford Heights; three step-children, Barbara Davidson of Kernville, Mary Parker of Bakersfield, and Bill Davidson of Portland, Oregon; one neice, Donna Peterson of Kernville.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 7 at 10';30 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park for Edward A. Edwards, 92, a long time resident of Kernville. Edwards died on Sept- ember 4 in a Bakersfield Hospital Services will be conducted by Rev. Kenneth Adams, pastor of the First. Methodist Church of Bakersfield. Interment will follow the services.


Edwards was born in Crab Orchard, Kentucky on August 15, 1881. He was a retired carpenter and had been a resident of Kern County for the past, 58 years.

Mary Lou Smith


Services were held at Valley Mort- uary Chapel at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 10 in memory of Mary Lou Smith, 37, who passed away on September 5 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Rev. Jose officiated at the ceremonies and Interment was on Tuesday, September 11 at the Green- hill Memorial Park in San Pedro.


She was born on March 14, 1936 in Southern California and she had been a resident of the Shady Lane Trailer Park In Bodfish for the past three years.


She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Johnstone of Bod- fish; two sons, Robert and Ronald; one daughter, Melody; three brothers, Kenneth Johnstone of El Segundo, Ronald of Bodfish, and Edward of Los Angeles. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.


Alice Weeks


Memorial services were held in the Valley Mortuary Chapel at 1 p.m. on September 17 for Alice B. Weeks, 70, who passed away at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield on September 8. Rev. Louis Gerdes, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kernville, ofdclated at the service. Interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Mrs. Weeks was born on April 20, 1903 in Oklahoma. She had lived in the Kern River Valley for the last elght years and was a resident of Onyx for one year. She is survived by the widower, Vernon; one daughter, Mrs. Oliver Farienholt of North Holly- wood; three brothers, Harold, Robert and Clyde Ragsdale; four sisters. Melvina, Doris, Lorine and Naomi; and one grandchild, Neil S. Gergo.


Louis L. House


Services were held at Highland Chapel on Tuesday, September 18 at 1 p.m. for Louis Loyd House, 74, of 2113 Crestview Ave. in Lake Isabella who passed away September 15 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Rev. Mark Stahnke officiated at the church service. Interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


House was born in Jewel, Iowa on April 14, 1899 and moved to California 18 years ago. He was a resident of the Kern River Valley for the last 54/2 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Inglewood and of the 55 Plus Club in Lake Isabella.


He is survived by the widow, Opal; two daughters, Cleona Melchert of Inglewood and Patricla Lash of Torrance; one brother, Charles House of La Crecenta; two sisters, Effie Johnston of Jewel, Iowa and Mildred Dixon of Apple Valley; and six grandchildren. Arrangements by Val- ley Mortuary.

Chapel services were held on Sept- ember 18 at 10 a.m. In the Valley Mortuary in Lake Isabella for Charles Philips Morris, 73, former resident of the Reeder tract in Lake Isabella. Morris died on September 14 at the Park Real Convalescent Home In Bakersfield. Rev. Dale Brown, pastor of the Baptist Church In Lake Isa- bella, officiated at the ceremony. Interment followed at the Kern Valley District Cemetery. He Is survived by his nephew, Leonard Jessen of Pasa- dena.

Graveside services were held for Mary E. Kirkpatrick, 76, on Saturday, September 29 at 11 a.m. Rev. David Morrison, officiated at the ceremony at the Kern Valley District Cemetery. Mrs. Kirkpatrick was born on April 30, 1897 In Indianapolis, Indiana and she passed away on September 25 at the Kern Valley Hospital. She was a resident of Onyx for the last six years and was a member of the Eastern Star and the Weldon Methodist Church.


She is survived by her husband, Leroy; one son, Philip Kirkpatrick of Rancho Mirage, California; one daughter, Eleanor Risdon of Onyx; one brother, M.S. Stevens of Wofford Heights; one sister, Myra Wood of Indianapolis; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Arrange- ments by Valley Mortuary.

Services were held in the Valley Mortuary Chapel at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 28 for Alta Ora Ketchum, 61, who passed away on September 25 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. Rev. Services were held in the Valley Mortuary Chapel at 11 a.m. on October 9 for Jacob Harrison Henserling, 86, a resident of Wofford Heights. Rev. Henserling was born on August 28, 1887 in Angaline, Texas and passed away on October 5 at the San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Darren Langley, 15, of Bodfish who was the victim of an automobile accident on Sunday, Oct- ober 14 in Lake Isabella. Interment was in Kern Valley District Cemetery following the memorial services.


Langley was born on November 24, 1957 in Bakersfield. At the time of his death he was living in Mill Creek and attending Kern Valley High School.

Ray H. Smith


Memorial services were held in the Valley Mortuary Chapel on October 24 at 11 a.m. for Ray Henry Smith, 58, who died on October 19 in Healdsburg Hospital In Healdsburg, California while traveling. Rev. Willard Vanfos- sen, pastor of the Kernville United Methodist Church, officiated at the memorial rites. Mrs. Mildred Kissee provided the organ music and Leroy Wilson was the soloist. Interment followed in the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield.


Mr. Smith was a beloved member of the community, he had resided here for nearly 20 years and was manager of the Bloomfield Ranch In Onyx for some time. He will be remembered for his continued staunch support of the Future Farmers of America. He was born on October 5, 1915 In Oklahoma.


He is survived by the widow, Effle of Lake Isabella; three sons, Royce and Randy of Lake Isabella and Gary of Germany; one daughter, Sue Hinkey of Sacramento; two brothers, Otha of Texas and Richard of Idaho; one sister, Olita of Texas; and nine grandchildren.


Pallbearers were: Walter Hanning, Al Salyer, Don Lewis, Jim Linton, Bob Winnler and Dutch Hendeson.


Maud Foster


Mrs. Maud Foster, beloved member of the Fouraquare Church of Wofford Helghts and dear friend to all who knew her, passed away on October 24 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Her daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Rogers and Mrs. Betty Fleming of Wofford Heights were with her. The Valley mourns the passing of one of its warmest, most devoted Christian women. Services will be announced at a later date.


Everett I. Hawes


Services were conducted in the Valley Mortuary Chapel on October 23 at 1 p.m. for Everett Ivan Hawes, 77. of 131 Sirretta St., Kernville. Rev. Willard Vanfossen and the members of VFW Post 7665 and its Ladles' Auxillary officlated at the services. Hawes was born on May 7, 1898 in Illinois and passed away on October 19 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by the widow, Lois; one son, David of Bakersfield; one daughter, Lugene Hetblack of River- kern; one brother, Ernest of Illinois; two sisters, Rena Wilson of Whittier and Maimle Stewart of Oblong, Iil- Inols and six grandchildren. Arrange- ments by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.


Earl Morley


Graveside services will be said for Earl Arthur Morley, 69, at the Kern Valley District Cemetery on Friday, October 26 at 1 p.m. Rev. Richard Magness, pastor the Wofford Heights Foursquare Church will offi- clate, Interment will follow.


Morley was born on June 12, 1904 in Massechusetts and died at the Kern Valley Hospital on October 22. He was the owner of the Sierra Boat and Trailer Storage in Kernville and was a resident of the North Fork Trailer Park. He had lived in California for fifty years and was a resident of the County of Kern for the past 30 years.


He is survived by a nephew, Artfar Morley of San Carlos. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.


Leacel Bivens Jr.


Services will be held today, Thurs- day, October 25 at 1 p.m. at the Foursquare Church in Wofford Heights for Laacel Lawrence Bivens Jr., 28, who passed away at the Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield on October 21. Rev. Richard Magness will perform the memorial rites, interment will follow at the Kern Valley District Cemetery.


Bivens waa born on March 12, 1947 and waa a resident of Lake Isabella. He la survived by his widow, Clydene; one son, Forrest; two daughters, Loyce and Cassandra, all of Lake Isabella; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leacel Bivens Sr. of Lake Isabella; one alater, La Cleta of Lake Isabella; three brothers, Virgil of Bakersfield, Ronald of Coalinga and Roy Del of Santa Rosa; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dowell of Bodfish and Mrs. Ethel Woodell of Oklahoma. Maude L. Foster


Maude L. Foster, 77, was laid to rest following a beautiful memorial ser- vice at the Wofford Heights Four- square Church on Monday, Ocober 29 at 11 a.m. Rev. Richard Magness, pastor, officiated at the service and Interment followed in the Kern Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Mrs. Roberta Magnes played many of "Mom" Foster's favorite hymns and soloists were Bobbi and Bill Grable and John Boice.


Maude Foster was born in Nebraska on September 19, 1896 and she passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on October 24 following an illness. She was a resident of the Kern Valley for eight years and a charter member of the Foursquare Church and the United Foursquare Women. Her christian spirit was a daily gift to all who knew and loved her.


She is survived by five children; Vernell Miller of Weatherford, Okla- homa, Lennis Allen of Van Nuys, Rev. Ray Allen of Clovis, New Mexico, Betty Fleming and Jeanette Rogers, both of Wofford Heights; Two broth- ers - Roy Hiatt of Los Angeles and Merle Hiatt of Bakersfield; four sisters - Jessie Cook of Lotton, Oklahoma, Bertha Hisel of Corning, California, Ethel Hisel of Culverson, Nebraska, Marie Grable of Duncan- ville, Texas; 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Graverde services were commem- orated at the Kern Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights on October 30 at 11 a.m. for Lulu Mae Watson, 69. Rev. Louis Gerdes, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kernivlle, officiated at the cere- mony.


Mrs. Watson was born on October 5, 1904 in Texas and she passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on October 25. She was a resident of the Wofford Heights Traller Park for the past six years and she had live in California for 33 years. She was a retired seamstress.


She is survived by her husband, Bert of Wofford Heights and one brother, Burt Ellis of Bakersfield.

Isabella Woman Killed


NANCY IVERSON, 37, of Lake Isabella was pronounced dead on arrival at Kern Valley Hospital about 7 p.m. on October 29 after the vehicle in which she was driving plunged over an embankment at the Kern Valley Golf Course. CHP Officer Walt Pascoe, responding out of


Glennville substation, reported that Mrs. Iverson was southbound on Kernville Road and apparently lost control of her 1970 Lincoln Continental, crossed the roadway and went over the edge. Deputy Lance Lipke reported from the Sheriff's substation in Lake Isabella. Jerry Wright Photo.

Roland E. Wickenhoefer


Roland E. Wickenhoefer, 68, of 3535 Linda Vista Dr., San Marcos, Calif. passed away at a local convalscent hospital Monday. Born March 1, 1905 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Mr. Wicken- hoefer came to San Marcos 2 years ago from Kernville where he had resided since 1941.


Mr. Wickenhoefer worked as a gardener in Kernville at the Mc Cambridge Lodge for 14 years. He was a WW I Navy Veteran and a member of the International Associa- tion of Machinists Lodge No. 727, North Hollywood.


Mr. Wickenhoefer is survived by two sons; Douglas "Bud" Wickenhoe- er of South Carolina and Keith Wickenhoefer of Northern Califonia; three sisters, Virginia McCambridge of San Marcos, Calif., Geraldine Palmer of Burbank, Callf., and Ruth Berge of Minneapolis, Minn., one brother, Clinton Wickenhoefer of Bur- bank, Calif., and 8 grandchildren.


Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Allen Brothers Mortuary. Interment will follow at the San Marcos Cemetery. Arrangements by Allen Brothers Mortuary.


George Fulkman


Graveside services were held for George Harry Fulkman, 26, at the Kern Valley District Cemetery on November 12 at 2 p.m. Rev. Willard Vanfossen, pastor of the Kernville United Methodist Church, officated at the ceremony.


Fulkman was born on May 27, 1947 in California and died November 8. He was living in the Larson Tract and had lived In the Valley for one week at the time of death.


He is survived by hia mother Kathryn Darr; two brothera, Robert of Lake Isabella and Larry of Hacien- da Heights; two sisters, Marie Cook of Lake Isabella and Wendy Darr of Hacienda Heights; and his grand- mother, Dora Van Fosgen of La Puente. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.


Murl D. Ice


Memorial services were said on November 17 in the chapel of the Church of the Nazarene at 11 a.m. for Murl Dee Ice, 85, of 2701 Scovern Ave., in Lake Isabella. Rev. Harry Gallo- way and Rev. David Zeigler officiated at the services, interment followed in the Kern Valley District Cemetery. Soloist during the services was Leroy Wilson.


Mr. Ice was born on July 13, 1908 in Greensburg, Kansas and passed away on November 15 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He Is survived by the widow, Emily; one son, Oren of Lake Isabella; one daughter, Barbara Faye Palmer of Norco; two sisters Leota Sultar of Witchita, Kansas and Edna Brown of Cerritos, and six grandchildren.

Earl Gray


Memorial services and a short prayer were held at the Kern Valley Church of Christ, 95 Burlando Road at 7:30 p.m. on November 28 for Earl Gray, a former resident of the Valley. Family and close friends attended the service following notice that Gray had passed away after a long illness. He was a resident of the Valley from 1900 to 1970 and was well known and respected by his many friends.


Robert E. Welch


Chapel services will be conducted by the B.P.O.E. NO. 2358 at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 30 at Valley Mor- tuary for Robert E. Welch, 83, who passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on Tuesday morning, Nov- ember 27. The Elks will also conduct a moment of prayer in memory of "Uncle Bob" at the Kern Valley District Cemetery in Wofford Heights. Interment will follow.


Welch was born on January 29, 1890 in Boston, Massachusetts. He lived for a while In Southern Callfornia, but had spent fifty years In the Kern River Valley. He worked for nearly 45 years as a packer into the high country, guiding tourists and visitors on the Kern Plateau. Until the last four years, "Uncle Bob" lived at Fairview, then he moved Into Kernville. He first joined the B.P.O.E. in 1921 in Southern Callfornia and later joined the local lodge.


His only survivor is his wife, Marguerite, of Los Angeles.


There will be an open house at the Wofford Heights Elks Lodge for Uncle Bobs' many friends and loved ones following interment.


Serving as pallbearers will be: John McNally, John Hinkey, Art Buller- dick, Norman Hylton, Barry Aubrey and John Burlando.

Service was held at United Metho- dist Chruch in Kernville Monday, December 10 at 11 a.m. for Sedric E. Hackley, 70, 200 Buena Vista Drive, Kernville who died December 7 in a Bakersfield Hospital. The Rev. Willard Van Fossen of the Kernville Community United Methodist Chruch officlated. Mr. Hackley, born in Dover, Mo:, restded in Kern County 48 years.


He was a past president and charter member of the Kernville Lions Club and trustee of the Kernville Element- ary School Board for 9 years.


Hackley is survived by the widow, Ernia; a daughter, Elelyn Witt of Valley Springs; a son, Thomas of Sunnyvale; 3 brothers, Porter of Ontario, Chalmer of Sunnyvale and Leslie of Shawnee Mission, Kan .: a sister . Leone Day of Upland, 3


Interment followed at Kernville Dis- trict Cememtery.

Mr. Hackley was born in Dover, Missouri, on Dec. 21, 1902. After completing his education, he came to Callfornia in 1922 and worked as an electrician for the Southern California Edison Company at Big Creek.


"Hack", as he was known to his associates, was transferred to Kern River Powerhouse No. 1 in 1927, and a year later was married to Erina Davies in the Episcopal Church in Paso Robles. In 1936, he became Southern Division test man, spending time at eleven powerhouses in the southland each year. The couple and thelr two children moved to K.R. No. 3 in 1937. That year, "Hack" designed and bullt the first cement block house In Old Kernville.


In 1944, he was promoted to electri- cal foreman, a position he held for 23 years. In New Kernville, he designed and built a second home in 1956, and retired in 1967, after 45 years with the Edison Company. He was on the Board of Trustees of the Kernville Elementary School for nine years, and was a charter member and a past president of the first Lions' Club in Old Kernville.


Pallbearers were: Paul De Baugh, Frank Becker, Robert Reynolds, Sidney McCollum, Keith McDowall, and Gene Pattee. Honorary Pallbear- era were: C.H. Wilson, Bill Heifner, Orian Campbell, Kenneth H. Grant, Henry Seeley, and Alfred Apalatea. Organist was Mrs. Willard Van Fossen.

William M. Coombs


Services were held on Saturday, December 8 at the Greenlawn Chapel in memory of William Mckinley Coombs, 77, of Columbus Street in Bodfish who died on December 5 In a Bakersfield hospital. Rev, William McCord, Trinity Methodist Church, and the members of the Oddfellows Lodge No. 251, Kernville officiated at the ceremony. The interment followed In the Union Cemetery.
