REV. HENRY SMITH.

FIRST GENERATION.

REV. HENRY SMITH, first settled minister of Wethersfield, Conn., is supposed, from the tenor of his will, to have been twice married. Of his first wife nothing is known ; of his second wife, her Christian name only, which was Dorathy. After his death, she was married to Mr. John Russell, of Wethersfield, father of Rev. John Russell, jun., successor of her first husband, in the min- istry at Wethersfield, and afterwards first minister of Hadley, Mass. She was his second wife. Mr. John Russell died May 8, 1680, aged 83 .*

IV. Dorathy, born 1636. V. Samuel, born January 27,1639. VI. Joanna, born December 25, 1641. VII. Noah, born February 25, 1644. Vill. Elizabeth, born August 25, 1648.

* Mr. John Russell removed from Wethersfield to Hadley, with his son Rev. John Russell and his other children, in 1659.

The births of the four youngest children of Rev. Mr. Smith are recorded in Wethersfield Records. In his will Mr. Smith mentions son Peregrine, deceased, and two married daughters, who had children : these daughters must, of course, have been older than those recorded. By the will of Mrs. Smith, alias Russell, there was a daughter Dorathy ; she was older than those born in Wethersfield, and younger than the two elder daughters. Thus there is proof that there had been at least eight children. From these premises, it may confidently be inferred, that the two married daughters were by a first and different wife, and that Dorathy was by a second wife. As Noah and Elizabeth are not mentioned in the will of their mother, it is to be concluded they died young.
