EUSTIS

Lake county was formed by an act of the legislature of the State of Flor- ida in the year 1887, from portions of Sumter and Orange counties. It con- tains thirty-one townships, embracing an area of over eleven hundred square miles, its greatest length being sixty miles, an average width of about eigh- teen miles. About one-sixth of its sur- face is covered with beautiful clear lakes of fresh water from which the county takes its name. That particular district of Peninsular Florida, so long and so favorably known as the Lake Region, is now principally embraced in Lake county. Nature has here in her best style fitted a magnificent semi- tropical region with ample space for a million people. The altitude of this dis- trict, midway between the Atlantic and the Gulf, affords its people constant, pure sea breezes with slight extremes of heat and cold. There is a ridge known as the "Florida Backbone,' which begins at the Georgia line, runs through the center of the State of Flor- ida, and ends less than 200 miles south of Jacksonville. All of the land more than 100 feet high on the peninsula is on this ridge. Eustis is on the southern extremity of it, and is the highest im- portant tourist resort in Florida. Eus-

tis is surrounded by hills covered with pine forests and hollows filled with in- numerable clear-water lakes. Eustis is located on the east shore of Lake Eustis, and is connected with Lake Har- ris, on the west shore by Dead River, with Lake Dora on south shore by a canal, Lake Griffin, Silver Springs and the St. John's by the Ocklawaha on the north shore. The lakes in this chain are among the largest in the State. To the lover of rod and reel these lakes and their tributary streams form a fish- erman's paradise. The smaller lakes contiguous to Eustis abound in bass,. bream, pickerel, perch and other fish. There is plenty of game in the lake regions and highlands of Lake county -- quail, squirrel, wild turkey, deer and bear. The Eustis hotels are the New Ocklawaha, the Grand View, the Flor- ida Home and the Sunnyside. The New Ocklawaha is one of the most popular tourist hotels in the state, opens Janu- uary 1st, closes April 1st. It was es- tablished by the late John S. Lane, of Meridan, Conn., is situated at the high- est point in Eustis, commanding a fine view of Lake Eustis and the surround- ing orange groves. The hotel is now owned by the Lane Realty Co. and is under the management of W. R. Smith, of Meridan, Conn., connected with the hotel is one of the most popular golf courses in the state. Lake county during the past two years, has spent one-half million dollars on the building of good roads connecting with highways be- tween the east and west coasts, and the Dixie Highway passing through the city. The developing of Eustis from a small country hamlet to the enviable position in which it ranks as the lead- ing tourist city in the interior of the state; the erection of so many hand- some winter homes, the miles of cement sidewalks“ and paved streets that have been laid, the construction of water- works, sewage system, electric, lighting plant, ice manufacturing and other im- provements make the city not only de- sirable as a winter resort, but as an

all-year residence, is largely the result of the opening of the Ocklawaha hotel. The facilities for motor boating on Lake Eustis and Harris can not be surpassed in any other section in the state. There are over one hundred boats on these lakes, comprising launches, cruising and racing boats. The latter class are boats making the highest rates of speed in the state. Eustis has an active Board of Trade, banking facilities provided by the Citizens Bank, one of a chain of banks in the state, and the First State Bank of Eustis. The Eustis Lake Re- gion is one of the leading newspapers in central Florida. Tel., W. U. Telephone connection. Exp., Sou. George J. Dykes, postmaster.
