KEY WEST
Population 20,000. A prosperous and enterprising city, the judicial seat of Monroe county, is located on Thomp- son's Island, or Bone Key, a small, low- lying coral island south of Florida mainland, 60 miles southwest of Cape Sable and commanding the entrance to the Florida Passage and the Gulf of Mexico. The city is a port of entry and military station of the United States, is garrisoned by the coast ar- tillery, has a safe and accessible har- bor defended by a fort. It has extensive docks, repair yards, marine railway, etc. Its mild climate has made it a popular health and winter resort. It is the terminus of the famous F. & E. S. Ry., built across the Florida Keys and shallows from the mainland in 1912. Cigars are very largely manufactured, which are famous the world over and there are important industries in sponges, coral and turtle shell and in deep sea fishing. The city has modern civic improvements, electric light, ice and water plants, sewage system, a strong bank, 4 hotels, a hospital, public library, 2 daily newspapers, Citizen and Morning Journal and Florida, weekly, a convent and boys' college, churches of the leading denominations, etc. Tel., W. U. Telephone connection. Exp., Sou. Marcy B. Darnell, postmaster.
