BARTOW


Population, 4,500. Is the most cen- trally located town in Polk county, of which it is the county seat. At an elevation of 116 feet above sea level, it stands at the western edge of a nar- row stretch of land known as the "backbone" of the state, distant 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and from the Atlantic Ocean. It is an im- portant railroad center, being served by the Atlantic Coast Line and Sea- board Air Line railroads. The trains which handle the passenger and ex- press now enter the Union Station re- cently built. $200,000 is being expended for concrete and asphalt paving, a new city hall has been built at a cost of $17,500. The electric light and water


systems represent


an investment of $126,000. Water is pumped from an artesian well 726 feet deep, thus assur- ing pure water. The public library has over 14,000 volumes. The new Court House, one of the finest in the state, cost $100,000, and a modern jail cost $70,000. The Methodist, Baptist, Pres- byterian, Episcopalian, Christian, Ad- ventist and Roman Caholic denomina- tions have substantial structures. Ice, cigar, wagon and concrete factories, the largest laundry in interior Florida, cit- rus fruit and vegetable packing houses, planing and shingle mills, novelty works, 2 bakeries and 2 bottling works are some of the most important indus- tries within the city.
