ORLANDO
Population 8,000. The judicial seat of Orange county, a county of a thou- sand lakes, is a prosperous and delight- ful city and a famous tourist resort, lo- cated on the S. A. L. and A. C. L. R. Rs., 91 miles northeast of Tampa and 148 south of Jacksonville. Orlando is most progressive city. It not only holds a place high in the list of popular tourist resorts, but also lays claim to being the center of the citrus industry of the state and in addition is the cen- ter of a very fertile, general farming and trucking country. The city is very attractive in appearance. It is a clean city. It is as wooded as the forest of Arden. One almost expects to find Or- lando's carvings on the trunks of the mighty live oaks, and can easily imag- ine that they can hear the love-lorn Rosalind exclaim: "I'll tell thee, Alie- na cannot be out of sight of Orlando." It is a city of homes. It is a place of beauty, with its palms, its roses and other flowers, and in midwinter it is
ablaze with poinsettias. It is on the central ridge of the state. Two great lake systems originate within its limits, one flowing east into the St. Johns river and the other west into the Gulf of Mexico. It is a modern city with splen- didly paved streets and sidewalks, elec- tric lights, gas, a complete system of sewage and of pure water. The streets extend from the business center into the residence sections, past well-kept parks, beautiful lakes, orange groves, rose gardens, truck gardens, patches of bananas, wonderful palms and nearly all the way beneath the shade of mighty oaks, interspersed with cam- phor, maple and eucalyptus trees. There are 4 banks-one national and three state-all strong institutions, many modern hotels, golf and country clubs, educational facilities of a high order; in addition to the excellent high and graded schools, there are several other educational units, notably the Cathe- dral School for Girls, St. Joseph's Acad- emy and Rollin's College, the latter 5 miles. distant; 2 large department stores and a large number of special stores, 2 daily newspapers, the Evening Reporter-Star and the Morning Sen- tinel, and a weekly, the Orange County Citizen, electric light, gas and ice plants, 7 large packing houses, planing mills, cigar manufactories, novelty works, crate manufactories, foundry and machine shop and numerous other industries. The city government is of the model commission form. There is a Board of Trade, with a large and ac- tive membership, rightly using the title "The Power House of Progress." Tels., W. U. and Postal. Telephone connec- tion. Exp., Sou. W. C. McLean, post- master.
