LAKE CITY


Population, 5,032. The judicial seat of Columbia county, is located on the S. A. L., A. C. L. and G. S. & F. Rys., 59 miles west of Jacksonville. As its name implies, the city is situated in the center of a group of lakes, which adds to the picturesque beauty. The lakes, seven in number, immediately in or around the city, abound with fish, affording pleasure and profit to the resi- dents. The city is the seat of Colum- bia College, founded in 1907. It has splendid buildings and complete equip- ment, having a valuation of $164,000, and an enrollment of 182 students (co- educational) and offers courses in lib- eral arts, science, music, art, education, business and expression, leading to the degrees of A. B., B. S. and A. M. The college is surrounded by a clean, moral atmosphere and is an ideal school for the proper education of young men and women. The city has excellent high and graded schools, churches of the leading denominations, 3 banks, 3 weekly newspapers, The Free Press, Florida Index and Citizen-Reporter.
