JACKSONVILLE

Population 103,120 (including sub- urbs). The largest and most important city in Florida, is located on the St. John's river, about 18 miles from the Atlantic ocean, and has direct ocean steamship communication with Bos- ton, New York, Philadelphia and Bal- timore. It has a water front of seven and two-tenths miles, is further west than any other Atlantic port and is nearer than any port north of Charles- ton to St. Louis and the Northwest. Its railroad facilities are equally good, the following lines centering here and affording easy connections with every portion of the country. The A. C. L., the F. E. C., the G. S. & F., the S. A. L. and the Southern.

There is probably no city in the United States that offers so many at- tractions as a place of residence as does Jacksonville. It is located on the banks of the St. Johns river, which extends almost the entire length of the state, and which affords ample op- portunities to sportsmen, yachtsmen and fishermen to indulged in their fa- vorite pastimes. It is within 40 min- utes by rail of the Atlantic ocean and one of the finest seaside resorts in America. Standing upon high ground and well drained by creeks that flow through it and by the great river sweeping round it, the city enjoys ad- vantages of fortunate sanitary topog- raphy, and its natural healthiness has been improved by perfect drainage, sewerage and other necessary sanita- tion. It has a splendid supply of almost chemically pure water, ob-

tained from artesian wells, which are sunk to the depth of about 1,000 feet. The climatic conditions are as near perfect as can be found in America. It is not only a very attractive winter resort, but even the summers are not as uncomfortable as in most northern cities, for it is fanned by delightful breezes from the Atlantic ocean. The population is cosmopolitan-probably as much so as any city of its size in the Union-and " strangers who come here to make this their home always find a generous and hearty welcome. The school advantages are excellent, and are being constantly improved. There are churches of all denomina- tions, a public library and the very best amusements are afforded the peo- ple of the city. It has gas and elec- tric light plants, waterworks, and ef- ficient fire department and a fire-alarm .telegraph and the largest and most influential Board of Trade in the South. Trolley lines run through all parts of the city and into the suburbs and there are a number of fine parks and pleasure resorts. There are miles of paved streets and beautiful shell drives. The mortality reports show that Jackson- ville is one of the healthiest cities in this country. The climate is particu- larly beneficial to all complaints origi- nating in or from the severity of a northern latitude; the mean tempera- ture is seventy degrees and it is cooler in summer than either Boston, New York or Chicago. The air is soft, balmy and exceedingly beneficial to all pul- monary complaints. It may be imagined

that because Jacksonville is in the ex- treme south that it is an isolated city, but with nine railroads extending to all portions of the country, and elegant Clyde steamships running 5 steamers a week to New York and Boston, the Merchants & Miners Transportation Co runs 3 steamers a week to Baltimore, and not only telegraphic communica- tion with all parts of the world but with long distance telephone, it is in touch with all the great business cen- ters of the country. The shipping in- terests constitute a large percentage of Jacksonville's progressiveness. The im- ports consist principally of flour, sugar, bacon, coal oil, shoes, fertilizers, steel rails, grain, etc. The exports are lum- ber, cross ties, shingles, naval stores, fruits, vegetables, kaolin clay, cotton, etc. The city has 8 banks with a com- bined capital and surplus of $3,958,000, and very much of the growth and prog- ress of Jacksonville has been due to these institutions, which have an es- tablished reputation for strength and stability. They have been the agencies that have gathered and stored the funds of its citizens to be loaned out to carry along and develop the city's manufac- turing and business interests and to provide its thrifty people with homes. The press is represented by the Flor- ida Times-Union and the Metropolis issued daily, the Commercial News, Dixie, Free Press, Herald, Republican, Florida Staats Zeitung and the Flor- idian issued weekly, and the Fraternal Record, issued monthly. The perma- nent prosperity of Jacksonville and its growing importance and wealth is as- sured by the constantly increasing de- velopment, prosperity and importance of a state that has resources for wealth far in advance of almost any other sec- tion in the country and has but just begun, so to speak, to properly develop them. The city has over 300 factories, great and small, has ten great saw and planing mills, a floating dock of 4,200 tons capacity, 2 large ship yards and wholesale and retail houses in every
