ST PETERSBURG
Population, 15,000. Is situated on the southermost point of Pinellas Penin- sula, Pinellas county, 270 miles south from Jacksonville. The city lies on a gentle slope rising to 40 feet on Tampa bay and extends backward in the form and a parallelogram. Recently the city has annexed a strip of land one mile wide extending westward five miles. Through the originally planned city and this "handle," Central avenue, which divides the city north and south, seeps west from Tampa Bay, a mag-
nificent boulevard seven miles long, straight as an arrow to Boca Ceiga Bay on the west. The city has a cli- mate that is ideal both winter and sum- mer, making it very attractive to tour- ists. This is a great fruit growing re- gion, mangoes and avocade pears, guavas and papayas or "paw-paws," and bananas and pineapples mingle with the common citrus fruit trees, such as orange, grapefruit, lime and lemon. Tall palms grow here and add to the beauty of the tropical scenery. The commission form of government was adopted in 1913. The civic departments are well organized and efficient. Pub- lic utilities are city-owned. There are 4 banks, all with handsome brick or stone buildings; the business blocks are modern and imposing. Among the industries are 2 ice and cold storage plants, machine shops, marine ways, fruit, vegetables and fish packing houses, wholesale grocery, grain and fertilizers, cement and concrete plants, tobacco factory and shops of all descrip- tion. The city is splendidly equipped for entertaining, the numerous and ex- cellent hotels, apartment houses and cottages furnish adequate accommoda- tions. Besides the public schools, there are a number of private schools, busi- ness college and girls' seminary. St. Petersburg is the southern terminal of the A. C. L. Ry. and connects with their line and the S. A. L. at Tampa by a line of steamers plying on Tampa Bay. The T. & G. C. Ry., has a line from Tampa to St. Petersburg. The Board of Trade, composed of progressive citi- zens, is active in the upbuilding of the city. Tel., W. U. Exp., Sou. Wm. L. Straub, postmaster.
