Population, 9,000. An incorporated city on the A. C. L. Ry. in Polk county, 13 miles northwest of Bartown, the ju- dicial seat, and 208 from Jacksonville. It is one of the best known and most thriving cities in the state. Lakeland awakened but recently to a realization of her splendid geographical and topo- graphical position (having the highest elevation of any town in south Florida), as well as to the valuable and varied resources of the county by which it is surrounded and as a consequence visit- ors and homeseekers have been seeking it, attracted by the altitude, water, cli- mate, orange groves, the many beautiful lakes and other alluring inducements. Lakeland has 3 banks, which are con- servative, yet thoroughly progressive; several miles of brick and asphalt
streets and is about to let the contract for several miles more; also a fine system of sanitary sewerage; an effi- cient light and water plant, municipally owned, and which has lately been im- proved by the expenditure of over $100,- 000, making it one of the best in the state; an ornamental "white way", cov- ering the entire business district, a modern fire-proof hotel, costing nearly $200,000; an auditorium seating 1,700; a new railroad passenger station and freight depot; a city hospital just com- pleted; fine up-to-date business houses, carrying stocks adequate for all the needs of a town much larger; several industrial plants which with the At- lantic Coast Line Railroad shops gives employment to a large number of peo- ple and furnishes a large monthly pay- roll. The water supply is of the best and purest anywhere. Modern sanitary sewerage system assures the health and comfort of the people, and there is no
