ST. AUGUSTINE

Population, 6,200. The judicial seat of St. Johns county is beautifully located on Matanzas Sound, one mile from the Atlantic Ocean, and on the F. E. C. Ry., 36 miles southeast of Jacksonville. The climate is charming, and it is a favorite winter resort, attracting people from all parts of the Union in search of health and pleasure, while the group of mod- ern hotels here are such that their fame is world wide. There are hotels of all grades to suit purse and inclination. Some of these would grace the capital of any European country or fitly house its sovereign, and are unsurpassed in the world for beauty and lavish splen- dor. These great hotels have much to offer in the way of social functions. There are always golf and tennis, boat- ing and bathing, sailing and fishing, and always the blue sky and soft air to make a spin on the hard shell roads more enjoyable. St. Augustine was set- tled in 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Avilles. It was then a well fortified post, a suitable defense both against Indians and buccaneers. Of the system of fortifications little now is left, but the pillars of the old gateway are still standing, the sea wall remains, a few of the quaint streets have not yet been improved, and the fort is always an ob- ject of interest. Fort Marion has been

It stands at the north end of the sea wall, where the Spaniards built it in the days of Spain's supremacy; it was then called Fort San Marcos. St. Augustine has all the ap- pointments and facilities of a modern, up-to-date city, being supplied with electric lights, water works, fire depart- ment, opera house, churches of the leading denominations, a fine public school system, The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, local and long dis- tance telephone facilities, public li- brary, hospitals, handsome and com- modious general and special stores, 3 banks, a newspaper, The Record, pub- lished daily, and 2 weekly papers, the Record and Meteor.
