FISHERIES,

CAND THE

FAMOUS GAME AND SUMMER RESORTS AND LAKES OF NORTHERN MICHIGAN.

THE WATERS of the Grand Traverse region and the Michigan North Woods are un surpassed, if equaled, in the abundance and great variety of fish contained.

BROOK TROUT abound in the streams, and the famous AMERICAN GRAYLING is found only in these waters.

THE TROUT SEASON begins May Ist and ends September Ist. THE GRAYLING SEASON opens June Ist and ends November Ist.

BLACK BASS, PIKE, PICKEREL AND MUSCALONGE also abound in large num- bers in the many lakes and lakelets of this territory. The Sportsman can readily send trophies of his skill to his friends or " Club" at home, as ice for packing fish can be had at many points.

TAKE YOUR FAMILY WITH YOU. The scenery of the North Woods and Lakes is very beautiful. The air is pure, dry and bracing.

THE CLIMATE is peculiarly benefiical to those suffering with HAY FEVER and ASTHMATIC AFFECTIONS.

THE HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS are good ; far surpassing the average in countries new enough to afford the finest of fishing.

During the season, ROUND TRIP EXCURSION TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT LOW RATES, and attractive train facilities offered to Tourists and Sportsmen.

Dogs, Guns and Fishing Tackle Carried Free at Owner's Risk.

It is our aim to make Sportsmen feel " at home " on this route. For " Northern Mich- igan, Lakes and Summer Resorts,"' an attractive illustrated book of 140 pages free, Time- Cards, Folders and further information, address

PREFACE.

The publishers of the present volume of the INDIANA STATE GAZETTEER AND BUSI- NESS DIRECTORY have endeavored to merit the approval of this large and important: State by the publication of a work replete with information that will not only benefit the business community, but prove advantageous to the citizens at large, by setting forth, in a concise manner, the notable features of the different sections. To this end, descriptive sketches of each place have been given, embracing various statistics of interest, such as the location, population, distance to different points, the nearest shipping station or landing, the products that are marketed, the express and telegraph companies, stage communica- tion, mail delivery, inducements to settlers, mining interests and business opportunities ; mention is made of the different churches and schools in each place; this is followed by an alphabetical list of business firms, which are again given in a voluminous classified directory with postoffice address ; a very full and accurate Shippers' Guide to every town and village, list of county officers, justices of the peace, etc.

Accompanying the work is a new map of Indiana, showing the congressional districts, and all the lines of railroads completed or projected.

A work of this kind necessarily involves a great amount of labor and expenditure of large sums of money, neither of which, in this instance, has been spared, the aim of the publishers being to make it, in every respect, creditable to themselves and worthy the confidence of the business public.

We thank those who have kindly afforded information and assistance, and the many business men who have given the work their support, and congratulate the peo- ple upon the substantial revival of business in every section of the country.
