BEDFORD. The county seat of Lawrence county, with a population of 2500, is located at crossing of the L. N. & A. and B. S. O. & B. R'ys., 71 miles northwest of Louisville, and 75 southwest of Indianapolis. This place is noted for its extensive quarries of excellent building stone, and, in addition to its four large quarries, has in the way of manufactories, three flour mills, two saw mills, a woolen mill, two planing mills and a spoke factory, with a bonded indebtedness of $31,000. The village has five churches-Methodist, Pres- byterian, Christian, Baptist and Catholic -- a graded school, an excellent college, five . hotels, one bank and an opera house. The press is represented by four weekly papers -- the Journal ( Republican), Banner (Dem- ocratic), Magnet (Republican), and Star (neutral).
