CHARLESTOWN. Forinerly the county seat of Clark county, is a pleasant village of 1, 500 inhabitants, located on the Louisville Branch O. & M. Ry, 13 miles northeast of Jeffersonville, the present county seat, Since the county buildings have been removed the place has not ad- vanced much, but it is in a good healthy condition, having only $300 of a bonded indebtedness, is surrounded by a rich farm- ing district, and contains nine churches, graded schools, one hotel, two flour mills, a cheese factory, woolen mill, truss hoop factory and one sawmill. The press is rep- resented by an excellent weekly newspaper, the Record, published and edited by Mr. W. S. Ferrier. It was established in 1869, and now claims 5,000 circulation. The village has a heading factory, saw mill, tannery, flour mill, and stave factory, and exports wheat, corn, hogs, cattle, lumber,
