GOSILEN. The county seat of Elk- hart county, is a thriving incorporated vil- lage of 4000 inhabitants, located at junction of C. W. & M. and Air-line Division of L. S. & M. S. Rys., Iro miles east of Chicago, 64 northwest of Fort Wayne, 24 southeast of South Bend, and 160 north of Indianapo- lis. Elkhart river furnishes excellent water power, which is used to operate most of its mills and factories. The city has excellent public buildings, including the county build- ings, ten churches, three graded and one high school, together with substantial busi- ness blocks, handsome residences and wide streets, giving' it quite a metropolitan ap- pearance. It supports four banks, four ho- tels and three weekly newspapers-the Dem- ocrat, Times and Independent. Prominent among the manufactories are three flour mills, three pump factories, linseed oil mill, three furniture factories, three planing mills, churn factory, chair factory, two woolen mills, school furniture factory, wheelbarrow and handcart factory, making the place one of importance as a manufacturing town.
