The county seat of Allen county, and the commercial and manufacturing metropolis of Northern In- diana, is, next to the state capital, the most important city in the state, with a popula- tion of 26,048, according to the 1880 cen- sus. The city is located nearly in center of the county, distant from Chicago 148 miles, and from Indianapolis 135 miles.
Fort Wayne has many and great natural advantages, being situated at the head of the Maumee river, and on the St. Joseph river at its confluence with St. Mary river, giving it an immense water power, which is brought into use by means of two canals, one a feeder from the St. Joseph river, the other the Wabash and Erie canal, which are lined with factories from one end to the other.
Its location is very healthy, has admira- ble facilities for sewerage, excellent water furnished by an artesian well 3,000 feet deep, and said to contain good medical properties.
RAILROADS.
This city has excellent advantages in commerce and trade, being traversed by five good railroads. The Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific is the longest, the main track reaching from Toledo to St. Louis, and, with its leased lines, makes unbroken connection with all cities of the far west.
