CLINTON. An incorporated town, having a population, according to the cen- sus of 1880, of 500. It is a station on the line of the. C., St. L. & N. O. R. R., 200 miles from Louisville, and is the seat of justice for Hickman county. The banking business of the place is transacted at Cairo, Ill. Four churches -- Christian, Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian-with good pub- lic school, are here. This town is also the location of the Clinton College, which was established in 1874, and has obtained a justly celebrated name as a first-class educational institution. It has 177 pupils, and employs 5 teachers. The town also supports a news- paper (the Clinton Democrat), a saw-mill, grist-mill, and stave factory, 2 good hotels- the Davis and Robinson Houses-and a public hall for entertainments, etc. Corn, wheat, tobacco, and produce, with some live stock, form the shipments. CLOVER BOTTOM. A country post-office and small settlement in Jackson county, 12 miles north-west of McKee. the county-seat, and 140 south-east of Louisville. Ship to Harris, the nearest railroad point on the Richmond div. L. & N. R. R .; nearest bank at Richmond. CLOVER FORK. The name of a small post-office in Harlan county.
CLOVERPORT. An important landing on the Ohio River in Breckenridge county, 110 miles south-west of Louisville, and 35 north-east of Owensboro, on L. &N. R. R., the nearest railroad approach. The town is incorporated and contains a popula- tion of 1,056 (census 1880). Numerous improvements have lately been made and the town is in a flourishing condition. There is an enterprising weekly newspaper, the "Breckinridge News," a bank, 2 plow- factories, 2 wagon-factories, a flour-mill. spoke-factory, 4 tobacco-factories and churches of the Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist and Catholic denominations, (white) and 3 churches for colored people (1 Baptist and 2. Methodist ), with good public schools. All river packets stop here daily, going both north and south. Tobac- co, live stock, produce and grain are shipped to a considerable extent. Some coal is mined here and large deposits are in the vicinity, Stageto Hardinsburg, the county- seat, 11 miles east daily. Express Adams, Mail daily. John C. Heist, postmaster. COALTON. In Bord county, is a station on the A., I. & C. R. R., and a vil- lage of about 75 inhabitants, located in the western part of the county, 10 miles from Catlettsburg, the county-seat. The nearest bank is at Ashland. The adjacent country is rich in coal deposits, and 18,000 tons are said to be shipped per month. Express Adams. Telephone connection with Ash- land. Daily mail.
