LEXINGTON. The county-seat of Fayette is located on the lower fork of the Elkhorn river. Its general appearance is very attractive, its streets are broad, paved, and lighted with gas, and are flanked on either side with handsome, substantial business blocks and private residences. It is especially celebrated for its educational institutions, among which are the Ken- tucky University, the State College of Kentucky, Sayer's Female Institute, Christ Church Seminary, and Hamilton Female College. This last-named institution is the largest and best-arranged building in the State, for the purpose for which it was erected. It is elegantly built, and as per- fectly-ventilated as possible. It has all the modern improvements, being heated by steam, lighted with gas, and furnished with excellent suites of bath-rooms. It is favorably-located in the northern limits of the city, and therefore free from much of the bustle that would be encountered, if located in the business portion of the city. The institution is the property of a joint- stock company, and, since its puchase in 1877 by the company. has been presided over by J. T. Patterson, who has been at the head of a female boarding-school for a , greater number of consecutive years than

The cemetery of Lexington, lo- cated at the western end of the city, is one of the most beautiful in the United States. The remains of many of the most illustri. ous men of the State, are interred kere. In this cemetery is a fine monument erected to the memory of Henry Clay. It is 119 feet high, and surmounted by a life-size statue of the eminent statesman. Lexing- ton is the site of the Transylvania Print- ing and Publishing Company, which was established in 1871, and commenced with & large and complete assortment of all ma- terial used in first-class printing and pub- lishing houses. At the close of 1880 the company, by vote of stock-holders, con- cluded to discontinue business, and sold the entire outfit to Dr. W. O. Sweeney, Wm. H. Cassell, T. Logan Hocker and Wm. Plunkett, who now constitute the company, the two latter taking an active part in the business. The company will, by the close attention given, and the prompt- ness with which they dispatch business, insure certain sueces -. They are prepared to do all classes of fine printing, such as catalogues, bill-heads, wedding cards, letter and note-heads, as well as book-binding in all its departments. The trade of Lexing- ton is extensive and various, and several manufacturing enterprises are carried on. Three good hotels are located here, the Phoenix, the Ashland House and the Southern Hotel.
