COVINGTON. This city, the second in the State, is located in Kenton county, on the Ohio river, at its confluence with the Licking, directly opposite Cincinnati, with which it is connected by the largest single span wire suspension bridge in the world. It is also connected with Newport, on the opposite bank of the Licking river, by a wire bridge. The county-seat i, Inde- pendence, 10 miles south, but the business is virtually carried on here, this place be- ing the location of the court-house and county jail. It is the northern terminus of the K. C. R. R., and, among other points of interest, contains 24 church edifires, among which are 5 Catholic, 1 Episcopal,
2 Presbyterian. 3 Baptist and 2 Christian, and 6 public schools, employing 63 teachers, and having 3,279 scholars. The new post- office is a magnificent- building, recently erected, at & cost of $250,000 in the mos: modern style of architecture. A glass- works, 5 distilleries, 4 breweries, 4 flour- mills, a stove foundry, 3 machine shop -. 3 tobacco factories, a nail factory, a dry dock, and an opera house, with a seating capacity of 1,000. are also here. The city presents a most attractive appearance Street-cars run on all the principal streets and avenues. Its corporate limits cover an area of 2,000 acres, Its bonded indeht- edness amounts to $1,023,800, and it has an assessed valuation of $14.500,000. The Holly system of water-works and & paid fire department are sustained. The popu- lation, according to the census of 1880. 1s 31,000. The principal articles of export are tobacco, whisky, and glassware. Stare communication daily with Independance and Burlington, fare 50 cents and $1 re- spectively.
