GEORGETOWN. This town, ac- cording to the census of 1880, has & popu- lation of 2,051, and is the county-seat of Scott, in the eastern part of the county, on the C. S. Ry., 12 miles north of Lexing- ton, 18 north-east of Frankfort, 67 south of Cincinnati, and .89 east of Louisville. The place abounds in costly private res- idences and business blocks. Its educa- tional facilities are extensive. Georgetown College, founded in 1829, is located here. In addition to the above, there are locat- ed here. Warrendale Female Seminary, Georgetown Seminary, Mrs. Ballon's, a free school and several private ones. There are six churches, as follows: Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Christian, Episcopal, and Catholic. There are also 2 banks, with an aggregate capital of $450.000- the Farmers' Bank of Kentucky is one of the prominent banks in the State, and is a branch of several banks, which, in the aggregate, represent over $1,000.000- 2 steam flouring mills, a Masonic and pub- lic hall, two weekly newspapers, the Georgetown Times and Every Saturday, and 3 hotels, the most worthy of note being the Georgetown Hotel. The streets of the town are beautifully shaded and lighted with gas, and it receives an ample supply of water from the famous "Big Spring," which flows from a high bluff of limestone rock. GLASGOW. This city of 1,800 in. habitants is the county-seat of Barren county. It is the south-western terminus of the Glasgow branch of the L. & N. R. R .. 10 miles from the main line, and 101 from Louisville. Here is a carding-mill, 4 flour-mills, a bandle factory, a weekly newspaper, and a good hotel, the Murrell House, a number of fine churches, and 2 superior educational institutions, the Glas- gow Normal School, favorably-known, and the Liberty Female College, which is also one of the most prosperous in the State, and is replete with all modern appliances for educational improvement. Glasgow is in the very center of the best oil-producing portion of the State. It is a distributing point for a large section of country, and enjoys a good trade from the counties south. R., located in the north-west corner of Barren county, 11 miles from Glasgow, the county-seat, and 91 from Louisville.
