In the following section of the work the post-offices of Kentucky are arranged in alphabetical order, and a description is given of each place, with an alphabetical list of all persons doing business therein.


AARON'S RUN. A discontinued post-office in Montgomery county.


ABBETT. A country post-office in Trimble county, 8 miles east of Bed- ford, the county-seat, and the same distance south of Carrollton, the nearest shipping point on the Ohio river. Stage to Carroll- ton. M. M. Dunn, postmaster and gen- eral store.


A.DA. Calloway county, 3 miles from Tennessee state line, and 5 miles south of Murray, the county-seat. Paris, Ten- nessee, is the nearest bank location, and most accessible shipping point. Popula- tion 40. Tobacco forms the only export. Stages to Murray and Paris daily ; fare $2. Mail tri-weekly. L. P. Mansfield. postmaster.

ADAIRVILLE. An incorporated town, first settled in 1820; is located in the


extreme southern part of Logan county, 3 miles north of the Tennessee state line; and 13 miles south of Russellville, the county-seat and nearest shipping point on the L. & N. R. R. Red river here furnishes good power, utilized by a flour and grist-mill. The town has a population of about 300, and sustains three churches, a good public school, a weekly newspaper, the Logan Sentinel, a bank, and a woolen millin the vicinity. Improvements amount- ing to $25,000 were made here during last year. . Shipments consist principally of wheat, tobacco, and stock. Price of land adjacent averages from $20 to $50 per acre. Stage to Russellville, daily ; Springfield, tri- weekly ; and Franklin, semi-weekly; fare $1 each. Adams Express office at Rus- sellville, is its nearest express point. Mail daily. S. C. ALBANY LANDING. Also called Whetstone, is a village and landing on the Cumberland river. It is in the eastern portion of Cumberland co., 7 miles


north-east of Burkesville, the county-seat. The nearest railway approach is Glasgow, but all shipments can be made direct via Cumberland river. The products are chiedy walnut lumber, grain and tobacco, although somne produce is marketed. Population 25. Mailtri-weekly. E. L. Higginbottom, post- master.

A grist and saw-mill, 5 churches, one public and two private schools are here. Fine, cider and farm produce i, marketed. Daily stage communication with Newport; fare 65c. Mail daily. ALLENSVILLE. This incorpora- ted town, of 400 inhabitants, is a station on the Memphis branch, L. & N. R. R., in Todd county, 9 miles south-east of Elkton, the seat of justice, and nearest bank, to which a daily mail stage runs, fare $1. Good power is afforded here by Elk Fork creek, util- ized by three flour-mills. A newspaper, the Gazette, 5 churches, a public school, and a good hotel, are sustained. Wheat, to- bacco, and live stock are shipped, and good farming land, in the vicinity, av- erages $40 to $75 per acre. Express Adams; Telegraph W. U. Mail daily. John T. Smith, postmaster.

Three churches, Reforin, Methodist. and Baptist, and good public and private schools are bere. Population about 250. A good open- ing for a four-mill, is presented here. Grain,

ANCHORAGE. Incorporated as a town in 1878, is a station on the line of the L., C. & I .. R. R., in Jefferson county, 12 miles east of Louisville, the county-seat. Improvements amounting to about $20,000 have recently been made, and the town, which is rapidly increasing, now has a population of about 500; 5 churches, Meth- odist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Baptist, and colored Baptist, and one school, a sem- inary for young ladies, and a military academy, are here.
