HOPKINSVILLE. The county seat of Christian, the fourth county in . wealth and population in the State, was located and laid off in 1799, and was origi- nally called Elizabethtown. It is prettily located on Little River, and upon the dividing line between the prairie lands of South-Christian and the hilly region in the northern part of the county. The lands embraced within the corporate limits are sufficiently rolling to afford good drainage, and the city is one of the healthiest in the Mississippi Valley. The city is situated on the L. & N. R. R .. 71 miles from Nash- ville, 87 from Evansville, and 175 from Louisville. In 1870 the place had a popu- lation of about 3,000 souls, since which time it has nearly doubled. Nocity in the State has made more rapid progress during the past few years. Her tobacco market, which is not yet ten years old, is the third in importance in the State. Her location makes her the natural market of the largest and most productive tobacco grow- ing region in the world. Her churches, 9 in number, are large, weil-constructed, handsome buildings, and a fine new public school building has just been completed. The court-house, which cost $90,000, is one of the largest in the State, and is an orna- ment to the city. Among her more im-

McCamey, Bonte & Co., and is the largest in Western Ken- tucky; a plow factory, five tobacco re- handling houses, and 3 weekly newspapers. The Kentucky New Era ( Dem.) is one of the most influential in the State. The South Kentuckian is also Democratie in politics, and is a prosperous. well-con- ducted sheet. The Republican is in polities what its name implies, and although recently established, bids fair to become an influential public organ. Its educational institutes are Bothel Fe- male College (J. M. Rust, A. M., Presi- dent), employing 10 teachers. This col- lege is in a flourishing condition and is celebrated as one of the finest institutions in the State. The South Kentucky Fe- male College, and the Western Kentucky Lunatic Asylum are located bere. The steam flouring-mill and grain elevator of Messrs.
