He m. Leigh Bemis of Shrewsbury. He d. at Monrovia, Cal., June 15, 1910. She d. at Pomona, Cal., June 30, 1946.

They resided at Holyoke where he be- came a carpenter and builder. He built the First Congregational Church, Marble Hall, and many houses in Holyoke, where he had settled in 1875. He founded the firm of Doane and Williams, Con- tractors, with his father-in-law, John T. Williams of Charlemont. He d. Jan. 28, 1923, buried in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke. His wife d. Nov. 11,1930. Children:

He was at Hopkins Academy at Hadley at the time of the blizzard of '88 and went home to Hawley on Saturday after the storm, going on the first train which went through to Shelburne Falls. He walk- ed from Charlemont to Hawley. He was with Merrick Lumber Co. of Holyoke for 52 years, in various capacities from office boy to President, retiring Oct. 1, 1942. He m. (first) Edith Chase of Holy- oke, Oct. 9,1895. She d. April 25, 1907. He m. (second) Josephine Allis of Florence, June 21, 1924. She d. July 1,1947. Mr. Doane now resides at Florence. Children:

DYER, NEWELL (2), (Newell (1)) b. at Plainfield, m. Rose Thayer, who was b. at Pudding Hollow in Hawley, in 1885 or 1886. They settled in Hawley. Hed. in 1900 and his widow m. (second) William Moore, removed to Rahway, N. J., where she d. in 1943. Issue:


i. Edwin W. F. (3), b. Mar. 20, 1888 at Hawley, m. (first) Minnie Howard of Northfield, in March, 1909. Hem. (second) Laura Krueger. Hed. June 17, 1948, at Bernardstor. He had three children by his first marriage.


ii. Anna (3 ), b. 1890 at Hawley, m. Carl Zeyen, resides at Ma- tawan, N. J.


iii. Mary E. (3), b. June 5,1893 at Hawley, she left Hawley in 1906. M. Charles H. Thayer, Aug. 24, 1909, resided at North Leverett. She d. July 20, 1949. Had: 1. Thelma M. (4), b. Oct. 6,1910. 2. Charles N. (4), b. Dec. 16, 1912.


iv. Charles (3), b. 1899 at Hawley, m. Valentine Papilon of Greenfield, resides at West Townsend.

1. EDGERTON, CAPT. JOSEPH (1), came from England, year unknown, settled at Norwich, Ct. He was lost at sea and his ship's fate was never known. When he came to Norwich he brought with him, four sons and one daughter.


i. Simeon (2), settled at Pawlet, Vt.


ii. Benjamin (2), settled at Bennington, Vt.


iii. William (2), settled at Hartford, Ct., and was a seafaring man.

2. EDGERTON, JOSEPH (2), (Capt. Joseph (1)) b. in 17 -- , m. Lucy Lyon, came with his family of six children to Hawley in 1775, being one of the first families to settle here. He settled, with four other fam- ilies, in what is known as "Bozrah" in Hawley, on a farm later oc- cupied by Erastus Brayman. Mr. Edgerton d. in 1809, his wife d. in 1823. Children:

i. Darius (3), m. Mary Beckwith, settled at Charlemont, later removed to Ovid, N. Y., where he d. in 1840. Children: 1. Eunice (4). 2. Betsey (4). 3. Amy (4). 4. Maria (4). 5. In- fant (4), d. in infancy.


ii. Oliver (3), m. Persis Rice, settled on afarm in Hawley which was in a state of wilderness when he settled there. He re- moved to Brecksville, Ohio, in 1831, where he d. in 1849. His wife d. in 1836. The farm in Hawley was sold to Simeon Crittenden Jr. in 1834. The house on the farm was built in 1807. He had an adopted dau., Lorina Skiff, who m. John Milton Leonard. See Leonard records:


iii. Joseph (3), m. Candace Rice. All of their eleven children were born in Hawley. He removed with his family to Brecks- ville, Ohio, in 1815, being one of the first settlers of that town, then a wilderness. Hed. in 1842, his wife d. in 1855, and the last of their children d. in 1886, All but two died in Brecksville, one in Missouri and one in Wisconsin. All were farmers.

vii. Lucy (3), tne only one to be born in Hawley, m. Alfred Rice, a mechanic. He d. in Savoy, she d. in North Adams. Child- ren: 1. Alonzo (4). 2. Lorenzo (4), a manufacturer at Wash- ington, D. C. 3. Sybil (4). 4. Abigail (4). 5. Huldah (4). 6. Quartus (4) a merchant at Pueblo, Col. 7. Chloe (4).


3. EDGERTON, EZEKIEL (3), (Joseph (2), Capt. Joseph (1)) succeeded to the family homestead, and was the only one of his name and ge- neration whose life was spent, and family reared, in Hawley. He was a farmer and mechanic. Besides being a carpenter and build- er he had a shop in which he made various kinds of cabinet work, wagons and sleighs. He was a very well educated man of his day. He m. Lucy Fales of Charlemont, dau. of Dea. Ebenezer Fales, in 1800. Mr. Edgerton d. in 1837, his wife d. in 1823. Both are buried in Bozrah Cemetery. Children:

iii. John (4), b. 1805, d. 1883 at North Royalton, Ohio.

iv. Roswell H. (2), b. May 26, 1821, m. Eliza H. Longley, dau. of Capt. Edmund Longley, May 13, 1847, d. Aug. 21, 1891. They resided at Charlemont. Children: 1. Herbert Levi (3). 2. Alice E. (3). 3. Henrietta (3).
