From Atkins' History of Hawley:

"A record has been furnished, showing that the cemetery in the old sixth district was opened in 1827, and that Capt. Luther Rice's child was the first buried there. The record gives the names of 57 buried there, and having been abandoned several years ago, it is evident that nearly a hun- dred have been buried there."

CHAPTER 4 SCHOOLS

On May 7,1792, the year the town was organized, L3C were voted for schooling. A committee of seven was chosen to divide the town into school districts. This committee consisted of Edmund Longley, Ebenezer Hall, Abel Parker, Amos Crittenden, Zebedee Wood, Able Warner, and Jona- than Fuller. In 1795 the appropriation was doubled, in 1797 L 75 were raised, in 1840, $500. 00, in 1887$900. 00. The expense in 1924 for transportation to school where necessary was $3600. 00. There were then 6 districts. The 1924 school report shows resources, $11, 374. 00, expenditures $13, 089. 00, a deficit of only $1, 714. 00. The 1950 school. reports shows resources, $11, 415. 00. Expenditures, $11, 415. 00.

On May 6, 1793, L210 were voted to build seven schoolhouses, L30 to each, and the following building committee was appointed: District No. 1, Reuben Cooley, Zenas Bangs, Ebenezer Hall. No. 2, Joseph Lathrop, Ichabod Hawkes. No. 3, Elijan Hammond, Asa Blood, Asher Russell. No. 4, Hezekiah Warriner, Samuel Hitchcock, David Parker. No. 5, Arthur Hitchcock, Phineas Scott. No. 6, Ebenezer Borland, John Camp- bell. No. 7, Jonas King, Simeon Crittenden. It was voted that the sev- eral school houses "be built fit to keep a winter school in by the first of November next. "

In later years there were eleven districts, one of which was called the "Union", being a univn with Plainfield. That house being burned some years ago, that district was disbanded. When the Legislature made the school district system optional with towns. Hawley with many other towns abolished her school districts in 1867. Soon after, some of the territorial lines were changed, condensing some of the districts. In 1878 the town appropriated $1.000. for the support of schools, and the committee, composed of Messrs. H. S. Barton, Charles Crittenden, and J. W. Doane, reported eight districts in which schools of six months each had been taught. The number attending school was 164, and the average attendance 138. In 1887 there were eight districts which supported six months of schooling in each year. In 1950 the school calendar was for the full ten months. At that time Mrs. Phyllis Volland was teacher at the Pudding Hollow School, Mrs. Harriet Smith, who had taught in the East School for many years, resigned because of illness and the East School was taught during 1950 by Mrs. Jessie Hosley for two months and by Mr. Leo Vigneault of Greenfield for the balance of the year. Mrs. Esther Gal- braith was music supervisor. The school committee in 1950 consisted of Belle T. Bellows, Chairman, Helen M. Stiles and Gertrude L. Ogden. The school physician was Dr. Bronie J. P. Apshaga, Julia Burnett was school nurse. The average wages paid to teachers in 1887 was about $4. 50 a week. In 1950 the salaries averaged about $1732. 00 per annum. On Oct. 1,1950, the total enrollment in Grades 1-8 was 33. In 1950 there were two schools in use: Pudding Hollow and East Hawley Schools.
