On Aug. 24, 1825, the West Hawley church was organized with the 44 members who had been dismissed from the First Church for this purpose. In 1831 the membership was increased by 12, and in 1843 it was again in- creased by 12. In 1878 there were reported to be 18 males, 23 females in the membership, of whom 7 were non-resident. The church clerk was Willis Vincent, and the deacon was Samuel Williams. This office had been heldby Ebenezer Hall and Zenas Bangs, and at later periods by Samuel Hall and Ebenezer Crosby.
For the first fifteen years of its existence the church was dependent upon ministerial supplies, the Revs. Urbane Hitchcock, Dr. Packard, Theophilus Packard Jr., Anson Dyer and Joshua Crosby serving in this relation. The Rev. Moses Miller was installed as the first pastor, May 20, 1840, and retained his connection until Oct. 20, 1846. Prior to this settlement, he had been pastor of the church in Heath for 35 years, and is mentioned at greater length in a sketch of that town. He was b. at Worcester, Nov. 23, 1776.
The second pastor in the West Hawley church was Rev. John Eastman. He was installed Nov. 11, 1847 and continued with the church for eight

years. He wasb. July 19, 1803 at Amherst. He was not a college graduate but Amherst College conferred the honarary degree of A. M. upon him in 1851. He was licensed by the Franklin Association in 1833 and ordained the following year. He was dismissed in 1855 and the pulpit was supplied at brief intervals by Revs. Lewis Bridgman, Joseph B. Baldwin, Robert Connell and Robert Samuel. Mr. Eastman was recalled and he preached as long as we was able. He d. May 19, 1880. He was one, of the old school Calvinistic ministers and was quite an impressive preacher. On Jan. 5, 1851, he delivered a sermon at the funeral of Rufus Sears which was pub- lished in pamphlet form at the request of his parishioners. He had two daughters who were eminent teachers at Wellesley, Julia A., who was a writer, and Sarah, who was at one time Supt. of Schools in Hawley. See 'Natives Abroad' elsewhere in this book.
Interior of West Hawley Church.
Second Congregational Church, West Hawley. It originally had a high pointed steeple.
Courtesy of Mr. F. Deane Carter.
After Mr. Eastman's second pastorate the pulpit was supplied by Rev. Lincoln Harlow, Rev. Mr. Guild, and later by Rev. F. J. Grimes, all of Charlemont. The first building was erected in 1825, the present one in 1847. Rev. A. B. Peffers, the third pastor, served from 1880 to 1897.
The first Sabbath school in town was organized the first Sabbath in June, 1820, with 12 teachers. It continued with interruption. In 1887 Enos Harmon was superintendent, and there was a membership of 89, with 9 teachers. The West Hawley church also maintained a Sunday school and at the time of Mr. Samuel's pastorate it was said that the members of the entire congregation were regular attendants, with the exception of two men who could not be induced to attend. At West Hawley the deacons have been: Rufus Sears, Ebenezer Hall, Z enas Bangs, Ebenezer Crosby, Milo T. Carter, Samuel Hall, Frederick H. Sears and Samuel Williams.
Both churches in Hawley are of the Congregational denomination, and are the only churches that have been formally organized in town. The Methodists and Adventists have held services at different times. The town has pro- duced a long list of ministers. They are sketched in "Natives Abroad" in this book.
At the annual meeting of the West Hawley church, held on April 5, 1951, the following church officers were elected: Mrs. Ethel White, clerk;

Mrs. Helen Stiles, treasurer; Messrs. Rolland Stiles, Robert White, and Roy Hunt, assessors; Mrs. HelenStiles, collector; Mrs. Vera Phelps and Mr. Robert White, subscriptions; Robert White and Roy Hunt, dea- cons; Mrs. Wakefield, Sunday school supt. ; Mrs. Wakefield, organist; Mrs. Vera Phelp and Mrs. Ruby Hunt, communion table committee; Mrs. Annie Stiles, Mr. Wakefield and Mr. Roy Hunt, nominating com- mittee. At this time Rev. William Wakefield was pastor. Services were held twice a month. There were 26 members.
To show the prevailing sentiment in regard to church government, the following is copied from the records of a church meeting held Jan. 28, 1835: "Church met at the meeting house. Dea. Lathrop presented a com- plaint against Bro. Theodore Field for absenting himself from the public worship and ordinances of God. Voted that a communication be addressed to Bro. Field in behalf of the Church. '

CHAPTER 3
CEMETERIES
The first burial place in town was about a mile southeast of the former town house on what was known as the Childs lot. This was the territorial center of the town, therefore all who lived there were said to Live "just at the edge of Hawley". Although not in close proximity to any settlement, it was established there with the supposition that there would be the cen- tral business point of the town. The spot is away from any road. About twenty were buried there.
Before the first meeting house was built a cemetery was opened a mile east of its site. This was called the Doane Cemetery. Here are buried representatives of many of the oldest families, those who organized and manupilated the early transactions of the town, including Parson Grout. The oldest inscription found there is that of Nathaniel Parker, who died . Mar. 25, 1789.
When the old meeting house was removed and a new one built, about a mile and a half south, in 1847, a new cemetery was opened a little south of the present church. This was largely due to the efforts of Calvin S. Longley. It is called the East Hawley cemetery.
Before the beginning of the 19th century a cemetery was opened at Pudding Hollow. It is second in size as well as age. Some time about 1820 a cemetery was opened in the old sixth school district, a little east of what was known as the Graves place. It is called the Hunt, or South Hawley, cemetery. Here are buried the early settlers of the old seventh district. Here also is to be found the largest headstone in town, marking the grave of Jonas King. The slab stands six feet above the ground, is nearly three feet in width, two and one-half inches thick, the top being two inches convex. The inscription on this stone reads as follows: 'Sacred to the memory of Mr. Jonas King, the venerable father of the distin- guished Rev. Jonas King, D.D., Missionary to Palestine and Greece. On being asked by a friend if he felt any regret in parting with his son, as a missionary to the heathen, this rather in Israel replied, 'God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. And should I withhold my only son from obeying the command of our ascended Savior, 'Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. ' Mr. King was one of the first settlers in Hawley. He lived, in example and precept, a life of holiness. He died Sept. 20, 1832, aged 78 yrs., having a blissful faith in Jesus Christ and an unshaken hope of a glorious immortality. His last words were, "How often must my pulses beat, Before my joys shall be complete ?
Come, Lord Jesus! Come quickly. "
Ask vou my name, 'Tis Jonas King, Beneath these clods I lie, In life I suffered much by sin, And sın caused me to die!
22
HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF HAWLEY
But by the blessed Jesus, I Do hope to rise again, I then shall live and never die, And praise the Lord. Amen. "
At West Hawley a cemetery was founded as early as the church there, perhaps earlier, where many of the people of that part of the town are buried. It is on high ground and its approach from the road is steep and difficult. There is also a private family burying ground on the farm of Phineas Starks, in the southwest part of the town, where about a dozen graves are marked. This is now known as the cemetery near the Brim farm.
