1. GROUT, CAPT. JOHN (1), b. 1615, in England, came to Watertown about 1640 with his first wife, Mary --- , who d. in 1643. He m. (second) Sarah Busby Cakebread in 1644. She was the widow of Thomas Cakebread of Sudbury, whose land in Watertown Capt. John Grout had bought when the Cakebreadfamily migrated to Sudbury. Capt. G rout became a resident and an important personage in Sud- bury. Children:

Jonathan served with Mass. troops in the Revolu- tionary War. It was related that numerous Sudbury families mi- grated to Grafton, making an apparent link with the family of Lieut. Jonathan Grout of Grafton .. Had:

5. GROUT, REV. JONATHAN (5), (Lieut. Jonathan (4), Jonathan (3), Jonathan (2), Capt. John (1)) b. at Westborough, April 11,1763, m. Polly Taylor of Buckland, Sept. 27, 1795. Rev. Grout was gra- duated from Harvard University in 1790. He was the first minister of the Congregational Church of Hawley, being ordained to the min- istry there when the town was new, in 1793. He remained in that pastorate for 42 years, being released by death on June 6, 1835. See Ecclesiastical records. Children:

They settled in Hawley, later removed to Deerfield. He d. between 1885 and 1890, shed. in 1889. (The Joy records give the date of her death as Aug. 31, 1861. ) Children: i. Laura Alfreda (7), b. April 13, 1827, m. (first) Dr. Justin B. Warriner of New Jersey, m . (second) Christopher A. Steb- bins, resided at Deerfield. She d. in Feb., 1907. There was one child by the first marriage, two by the second mar - riage. All died in childhood. See 'Natives Abroad'.

iii. Hannah Joy (7), b. Mar. 20, 1832, m. George S. Clark of Easthampton, Nov. , 1853. Shed. in 1916. Children: 1. Fred H. (8), b. Dec. 13, 1856, m. Carrie J. Ashley of Middlebury, Vt. in 1888. She d. in 1907. He was an actor for 40 years and in later years became a law clerk at McAlester, Okla. He d. Nov. 8,1942. Their children: a. Denman Thompson (9), b. April 16, 1889, m. Wilhelmina Katherine Leverenz of Parsons, Kansas, Apr. 19,1915. He d. Aug. 16,1940. Their children: Katherine Amelia (10), b. Aug. 16, 1916, m. Claude Bare of McAlester, Okla., July 28,1938. Issue: Charles Denman (11), b. Nov. 8,1940, Albert Claud (11), b. April 7,1942, James Clarke (11), b. Jan. 12, 1944, Barbara Sue (11), b. Feb. 26, 1948. -- Winifred Loma (10), b. July 21, 1918, m. Walter Lavell Oct. 5,1940, resides at McAlester, Okla. Issue: Loma Linda (11), b. Nov. 7,1942, Judith Kay (11), b. July 26,1946. b. Winifred Marie (9), b. May 14, 1890, m. Atty. George L. Hill July 26, 1911, resides at Mc- Alester, Okla. Issue: Winifred Ashley (10), b. Sept. 30, 1912, m. W. M.S. Oates of Continental Oil Co. May 26, 1935. They reside at Lawton, Okla. , and have: David George (11), b. April 5, 1936, and Patricia Ashley (11), b. Aug. 14, 1939. 2. Frank (8), b. Aug. 29, 1859, d. in 1908. 3. Harry (8), b. April 8,1864, a commercial artist, he resided at Long Branch, Calif.
iv. Mary Pool (7), b. Aug. 13,1834, m. Benjamin Wentworth, resided at Deerfield, where her husband had the care of the Deerfield Memorial Hall for many years. She d. Jan. 25,1901.
v. Jonathan (7), b. Feb. 22, 1837, d. Mar. 10, 1837.
vi. Lucy Esther (7), b. Feb. 3,1839, became a school teacher. She m. Henry Seymour Childs of Deerfield, Dec. 7, 1865. He was Station Agent on the Conn. River Railroad in Deerfield and Town Clerk of Deerfield for many years. He d. May

6,1914, she d. Dec. 3, 1929. Children: 1. Herbert Leslie (8), b. Jan. 4, 1867, m. Hattie C. Lusk, June 25, 1891, re- sided at Deerfield. They had: a. Henry Everett (9), b. June 25, 1893, who m. Judith Hopkins, June 25, 1918. They have: Ella Elizabeth (10), b. Aug. 18, 1919, and Henry Everett (10), b. Jan. 8, 1924. -- b. Elizabeth Lusk (9), b. July 7, 1901, unm., resides at Deerfield. 2. Jennie Laira (8), b. Feb. 12, 1869, a retired school teacher, resides at Deerfield. 3. Ralph David (8), b. April 18,1872, m. Mary Green Went- worth. He was Postmaster at Rochelle Park, N. J., at the time of his death, Nov. 29,1926. 4. Alfred Henry (8), b. Feb. 29,1876, m. Lucy Anna Eastman, Oct. 21, 1901. He became a medical doctor, was a practising physician in Dublin, N. H. , for over twenty years, until his death, April 29,1922.

He was Express Agent at Easthampton, and and later Freight Agent at New London, Ct. He d. April 21, 1887, at New London, Ct. Children: 1. George Henry (8), b. April 13, 1878, m. Gertrude Coit Sistare of New London, Ct., Oct. 6, 1904. He d. Sept. 12, 1950. Their dau. : Frieda Coit (9), b. Oct. 30,1909. 2. Ruth Medora (8), b. May 21, 1885, at New London, Ct., m. Arthur M. Haynes of Denver, Colo. in 1925. They have: Ruth Evelyn (9), b. Sept. 10,1931. They reside at Denver, Colo.
