OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY.

JOHN ROLFE ?] .* He came with John Rolfe in the " Confidence," 1638, aged 12, as servant of John Sanders, who m. Rolfe's dau. Hester. In the same ship were Robert Ring and several other S. and Nb. settlers. [See p. 111.] He d. April 30, 1668[Nb]; inv. est., Sep. 29, 1668. Wid. Sarah m. ab. 1673, John2 Hale (Thomas1) of Nb., his 3d wife.t She d. ab. 1698. Children :

24 I SARAH,2 b. May 5, 1662[Nb]; m. May 15, 1683[Nb], William Titcomb, of Nb.#

25 II ANN,2 b. July 12, 1663[Nb] .;

26 III SUSANNA2 [or JOANNA], b. Aug. 7, 1665[Nb]: liv. 1688.

27 IV WILLIAM,2 b. Nov. 23, 1668[Nb], posthumous; liv. 1688.

* Documents at Salem prove that when John Rolfe of Salis. and Nb. came to this country, he left a dau. in Eng., who was wife of Richard Ring of Marl- borough, Wilts. Rolfe's will, 1663-4, 2d item, refers to his dau. Hester San- ders, wife of John Sanders and her chil .; 3d, to Sarah Cottell, wife of William Cottell and her two children, Sarah C. and Ann C. [the only ones then born]. to be improved by Wm. Cottl for their benefit, "in addition to what I have given her before;" 4th, to four Ring grandchil. then liv. in Eng. The will of Robert Ring, 1683, gave property to " Will. Cottle, son to Sarah, now wife of John Hale of Nb., and Joanna, lau. to said Sarah."

It has been assumed that Sarah Cottle was dau. of John Rolfe; but her age and other circumstances render it much more probable that she was his grand- dau. If she was the Sarah Hale, aged 33, who testified in the Caleb Powell case, in 1679-SO[CNb], she was b. ab. 1646 (or possibly a little earlier, as that would make her only 16 on the birth of her first child). The "Hale Geneal- ogy," 1889, says she was prob. b. 1636. She was, therefore, 10 to 20 years younger than her husband. She was, also, probably the " Goody Hale " named in Wm. Morse's evidence in his wife's case, 1681[C Nb].

In view of all these facts, we venture to suggest that she may have been Sarah Ring, born in Eng., perhaps after the Rolfes came to this country, that Robert Ring (perhaps her uncle) brought the child over when he came to this country the second time, ab. 1652, where she was brought up in either the Rolfe-Sanders family or the Ring family. Her mother was evidently dead i" 1663, and perhaps d. soon after her birth. CNb. gives John Hale's third wife, Sarah Symonds; but the record is without date, and evidently not official. It has been suggested that she might have mar. and bur. a Symonds in the brief interval between 1668 and 1673; but it seems more probable that the Symonds story is an error, arising from the fact that a step-daughter of Deputy Gov. Samuel Symonds m. another John Hale.

t By John Hale she had 3 chil .: Joseph, b. Nov. 24, 1674, m. Mary Moody. 1699; Benj., b. Aug. 11, 1676, d. Aug. 31, 1677; and Moses, b. July 10, 1673, m. twice.

# One Nb. record says Wm. Titcomb m. Sarah, another says Ann Cottle. Some or all the chil., b. 1684-1702, are given as chil. of Ann. Possibly he n :. both sisters.

OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY.

RICHARD COY (or COYE), b. ab. 1625, was one of the townsmen of Salisbury in 1650; "disallowed," p. 11. Coffin says that Richard Coye came over with his bro. Matthew in 1638, the former 13, the latter 15 yrs. old ; and their sister Mary, b. ab. 1612, mar. John Lake of Boston. Savage locates Richard Coy at Boston some years before and after 1650; gives his wife as Martha -; was of Brookfield in 1673 ; killed there by Indians, Aug. 2, 1675. Child :

CALEB, b. Aug. 15, 1666, Boston.

1 RICHARD' CURRIER, of Salisbury and Amesbury, " planter" and "millwright," b. ab. 1616; m. 1st, Ann -; 2d, Oct. 26, 1676[A Nk S], Joanna Pindor [wid. of VALENTINE2 ROWELL and of WM.' SARGENT]. He recd. land in S. in 1641 and '2; a com- moner and taxed in 1650. His name heads one list of the first commoners of Ames., 1654-5, where he was town clerk after Macy, and received land in 1654, '58, '59, '62, '64, and '68. He and Macy were authorized to build a say mill in 1656, and he owned a saw mill right in 1675. In the seating of the Ame". meeting house, 1667, his name stands first, "to set at the tabell ;" but he was apparently a member of the S. chh. in 1677[p. 20]. He was evidently one of the most prominent men in the new town .* [M. Ames., pp. 108, 114.] Wife Ann d. after 1662,

* Richard Currier's name appears very frequently on the records of deeds, for he owned much real estate during his life. One deed of his, conveying real estate, was written in 1685, acknowledged the day of his death, and not recorded till 1709. His last days were spent at the house of his wife's son, Philip Rowell. So thoroughly had he given away his property, that there was no administration of his estate till about 25 years after his death. His grand- son, Richard Currier, was ap. adm. Nov. 6, 1710; bond dated April 1, 1711; inv. and acct. March 26 and 28, 1712. Only one lot of land and his "common right" in Amesbury are entered.

A Richard Currier, prob. Rich.1, though he was then nearly 60 yrs. old, was in the Narragansett war. His descendants drew land in Narragansett township No. 1, now Buxton, York Co., Me., on his original right, as a Nar. soldier. Feb., 1575, the constables of Maritoro', Sudbury, etc., were to car .: for billeting the Plymouth forces passing through the towns; and the consta- bles of Lynn, etc., were to care for billeting the three Norfolk soldiers, Jne. Dickison, Richard Currier, and Tho. Mudgett for Abram Morrill, till they come to Salis. their home. [Mass. Archives.]

of A., sold to Wm. Osgood, Sen., 1683-1, house and land bought of John Hoyt, Jr., for the use of the ministry.

* Brown and Savage incorrectly give "Richard Currier, Sen., d. May 17, 1689." It was Richard Carr, Sen., of Salisbury, who died at that time, not Richard Currier of Amesbury. The latter was not called " Sen."

t The resemblance of family names, residence, and other circumstances, have suggested to many that Samuel2 was either son or younger bro. of Rich- ard1; but diligent search has so far brought to light no record which proves relationship.

# Sv. is evidently wrong in giving a dau. Sarah who m. Sam. Fogg of Hm. The date given for m. Fogy is the same as that for Foot. See D Hm. for Fogg family.

§ The impression that there was a Richard,2 son of Richard,1 is based largely upon an error in copying Currier for Carr on the A. rec. [See p. S7. ] There is no mention or intimation of a Richard, Jr., in A. Possibly (101) Rich- ard of the Isles of Shoals may have been a son of Richard1; but there is no proof, and little probability, that such was the case.

I Will of Thomas Hardee, Sen., of " Merrimack near Haverill " [Bradford], Dec. 12, 1077; March 26, 1678, mentions wife; eldest son Thomas; other sons John, Joseph, William, aud Jacob; son-in-law Win. Hutchins; " my daughter Mary and her children, besides what she has received." Thomas Hardy and wife Ann deeded land to dau. Mary, wife of Samuel Currier, in 1670.
