May, 1640 ; recd. land in the " first division," 1640 and 1641; one of the most prominent citizens of S .- town clerk, schoolmaster, justice of the peace, rep. in General Court seven years, 1651-'66, county recorder, associate judge, etc. Most of the ancient records of S., and many of the county, were written by him. He was of York, Me., 1634; m. ab. 1636, MARY" PERKINS (John1) of Ips- wich. Capt. and Mrs. Bradbury were second on list of S. chh. members, 1687. He d. March 16, 1694-5[S]; will, Feb. 14, 1694. Wid. Mary d. Dec. 20, 1700[S]. She was tried for witchcraft in 1602, ably and courageously defended by Maj. Robert Pike, con- victed, but not executed. The papers pertaining to the case are of deep interest, and show the high estimation in which she was held. [See Carr; Pike; "The New Puritan," New York, 1879, pp. 188-194; Upham's "Salem Witchcraft," Boston, 1867, vol. 2. pp. 224-238, 324.] Children :
