EARLY RECORDS.

EARLY RECORDS OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS.

The early town records of Salisbury have been preserved, and are tolerably complete. The record of births properly begins in 1639, though there are two entries dated 1637, and one 1638. The record of deaths begins in 1641, and of marriages in 1660. A copy of all these, not indexed, is deposited in the office of the Town Clerk of the present town of Amesbury. Another modern copy, indexed for names to 1844, is kept in the office of the Town Clerk of the present town of Salisbury. The Old Norfolk County records, now in the office of the Registry of Deeds, at Salem, give Salisbury births from 1639 to 1671, deaths from 1641 to 1673, and marriages from 1641 to 1672, with a modern copy. It will be seen that the record of marriages from 1641 to 1659 is found only at Salem ; but there are in existence two ancient and three modern copies of records of births 1639 to 1671, deaths 1641 to 1673, and marriages 1660 to 1672 *. These five copies are sub- stantially the same, for these dates, with but slight variations. Fortunately, however, one of the two ancient copies sometimes supplies what is lost or illegible on the other .;

The original records of births, marriages, and deaths in Ames- bury commence with the year 1686 ; and the modern copy in the office of the Town Clerk of Amesbury is indexed for names and dates. From the first settlement down to about 1667, the births, marriages, and deaths of Amesbury families were recorded on the Salisbury books, no distinction being made between Salisbury and . Amesbury families. From the incorporation of the town of Ames- bury, separate records of vital statistics were probably kept for that town ; but they are now missing, on the Amesbury records, for the eighteen years from 1668 to 1685, inclusive. This break is par- tially filled by a few entries of Amesbury births, marriages, and deaths on the Old Norfolk County records at Salem for 1668 and

" There are also some later records of Salisbury and Amesbury births, marriages, and deaths before 1700, in another building, among the County Court Records, at Salem, but they are mostly duplicates of those found on the town books.

! The account of Salisbury Families, published by A. W. Brown in N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg., 1853 and '54, is reasonably accurate, though there are some mistakes and omissions, sometimes of whole families, as the Rowells.

OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY.

1669, and others for 1670-1676 on an ancient Norfolk County book in the office of the Town Clerk of Salisbury, of which no modern official copy has yet been made .* The record for nine years, 1677-1685, is entirely lost, so far as now appears, besides a few entries, about the year 1668, which seem to have dropped out between the different record books. The town record has but two marriages from 1690 to 1697 inclusive, though there are ten Ames- bury marriages for 1693 recorded at Salem. It is this deficiency of records which makes it so difficult to obtain a complete geneal- ogy of early Amesbury families. Recourse must be had to probate records, deeds, and other authentic documents ; and much mate- rial must often be collected before even a single line of ancestry can be carried back to the first settlement.

Unfortunately, the earliest records of the churches, in both Salisbury and Amesbury, have been lost.

So many errors were found in Coffin's History of Newbury, that the town records have been examined, and most of the New- bury dates, for families included in this book, are taken from those records, preference being given to the oldest copy.

The earliest records of births, marriages, and deaths in Haver- hill were written in chronological order, down to about 1664. At that time a new record was commenced, arranged by families. Many of the old entries were copied into this book, and a few errors were made in copying. We have endeavored to follow the oldest copy in which the date appears.

The Ipswich dates are mostly taken from the town records, which, unfortunately, are missing for the earliest years of the settlement.

The Hampton dates are mostly from Dow's History of Hamp- ton, which seems to be quite full and accurate.

* In the same book are records of similar dates for Haverhill, Hampton, and Exeter; but most of the book is filled with records of the town of Salis- bury, of later date, and this is doubtless the reason it has remained at Salis- bury.

EXPLANATIONS.

EXPLANATIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS.

The letters in brackets after dates indicate the records from which the dates are taken.

The probate records are at Salem, unless otherwise specified. The first date given for a will is the date of the will itself, the second is the date of proof.

Under each surname, each individual is designated by a certain number. When the history of that person is resurned, the same number is repeated, in bold face figures; and when the same per- son is elsewhere referred to, the number is sometimes prefixed in parentheses, to identify the individual. The sign + indicates that the family record is continued in this volume.

Small figures after a Christian name designate the generation. Names in italics, placed in parentheses after a person's surname, indicate the ancestors of that person. The use of SMALL CAPI- TALS in printing a name in the record of a marriage shows that a further account of that person will be found in this volume, under that surname, in its proper place in the alphabetic arrangement.

The double date is given for the year, between January 1 and March 25, wherever it can be determined with any degree of cer- tainty.

Inscriptions on Amesbury tombstones were printed in Essex Co. Hist. and Gen. Register, Ipswich, 1894.
