hite (John). He was the sole grad. H. C. 1652 ;* began to ach in L. in 1654; ord. first minister at L. in 1660. After the truction of L., he settled in W., April, 1677; d. Nov. 23, 1678, wife surviving him. She wrote a narrative of the captivity of ut eleven weeks which followed the assault by the Indians, b. 10,1675-6, when some of her family were killed and the re- inder taken captive, except her husband, who had gone to ston. During his senior year at Harvard he wrote what was termed "a scan- us libel," and posted it up on the Ipswich meeting-house. In it he said le resident of Ipswich, "A wet eele's tayle and his word were something h ye taking hold of." He was tried and sentenced to be whipped or pay ad charges, 30s. He made an apology, and the remainder of the fine was tted in 1656.

In the Mass. Archives, Boston, 1653-4, are depositions of Edmund Elliot, ard North, John Gill, Henry Brown, Willi. Partridge, John Ilsley and Sarah, John Cole, and several others, about the drowning of Anthony er in 1650, and his property.

He rem. from S. to Nb. in 1642, though the births of chil. are recorded later in S. ; after 1655 returned to England, Weeks, parish of Dainton [Down- ton ], Wiltshire ; and ap. his kinsman Richard Dole of Nb. his attorney .; Children :
