* The original will of (4) Samuel,2 1700, has a significant blank space between the mention of Robert? and that of William," enough for one or two lines aus .. the page, more space than Robert's single line. James is not called " Eth son" where he is first mentioned, in the early part of the will. The person w !. wrote the will probably used that expression, based upon the will as it appears. James being the fifth son mentioned, with blank unfilled. Sam.3 and his father were prob. both living in Bradford in 1700; but Sam.3 was of Ames, in 1701.

(17) TRISTRAM3 BARNARD In. RUTH3 MARTIN (John,2 Geo.1)

(33) JOHN+ BARNARD, and note, p. 51. It was Capt. JJONATHAN who d. in I'D, not John, as in one printed copy of inscription in A. cemetery. This makes date of birth [July 31, N. S., or July 20, O. S. ] of (33) John incorrect. (1) JONATHAN4 may be the person; but, if so, there is an error of 1 y. 11 or !: d., somewhere, after allowing for change of style. Probably he was 68 instead of 67 years old. The error of 11 days might have arisen from using July 10. N. S., for date of birth, and then, thinking it O. S., another 11 days sight have been added, making it July 30.

John became melancholy, and at times insane. [See Bradb. Memorial, Pike's "New Puritan," etc.]

* The Carr family seem to furnish the connection between Salem Village [Danvers] and Salisbury, in the witchcraft delusion of 1692. Mary Carr was the wife of the first Danvers minister. Her youngest sister, Ann, visited her and married Thomas Putnam, Jr., of Danvers. Both Ann Putnam and her husband were prominent in the witchcraft trials, -especially in that of Mrs. Bradbury, where other Carrs testified,-aud both died in 1699. Their daughter Ann was one of the most active of the "afflicted children," or "accusing girls." She never married, and, when she was received to communion, in 1706, made a confession which is printed in Upham's "Salem Witchcraft," vol. 2, F. 510. Richard Carr and James Carr testified against Mrs. Bradbury; but Wil- liam Carr testified in her favor. [Upham, vol. 2, pp. 220-237.]

CHALLIS FAMILY.

1 PHILIPI* CHALLIS, Lieut., f [CHALLICE or CHELLIS], of Salisbury and Amesbury, "planter," b. ab. 1617 ; received land in the "first division," in 1640 and '44; was earlier at Ipswich, where he had house lot in 1637. His name is on most of the early S. and A. lists ; rep. in 1662.1 An original settler of Ames- bury, where he recd. land in 1654, '58, '59 and later, " children's hind " for his son in 1659, and a " township " for one of his sons in 1660; but he seems to have been a member of the S. chh. in 1677, as was his wid. in 1687. He m. ab. 1652,§ MARYº SARGENT (William1) ; d. in A. ab. 1681 ; inv. est. presented April 22, 1691. Wid. Mary d. Sep. 27, 1716[A]. Children :

I JOHN,2 b. July 9, 1653[S]; d. young.

: II JOHN,2 b. June 26, 1655[S]; d. ber. 1677.

1 III WILLIAM,2 b. -; d. Dec. 19, 1657[S].

IV PHILIP WATSON,2 b. Dec. 19, 1653[S]; d. young. li

" He was called either " Philip Challis " or "Philip Watson Challis." His vwn signature was "Philip Challis" in 1671, and his name was thus given in leeds, 1650, '53, '59, '69, '73, etc .; but "Philip Watson Challis" was used in (s). [See p. 23.] In the record of births, both forms are used. His widow :tyled herself " Mary Challis, widow of Lieut. Philip Watson Challis," in 1681 sad 1683, "administratrix by order of the court." She sometimes apparently Red " Watson-Challis " as a surname. In a deed, 1688, we find "Mary Challis «l'as Watson Challis, wid. and adm. est. Philip Challis, alias Watson Challis; wod William Challis, alias Watson Challis, eldest son and heir of said Philip Watson Challis, both of A." Also " William Challis, alias Watson Challis," in

! He was chosen Lieut. of the foot company of S. in 1658, as certified by Nrg. Hoyt and Serg. Stephens, in document in Mass. Archives. In June, 1680, , de was discharged from the " foot company " of S., and ap. " leftenant to the military company at A."

! When the inhabitants of Salisbury, Hampton, Newbury, Haverhill, and Andover, petitioned the General Court to revoke the sentence against Robert fike, the Court resented the matter so deeply that most of the signers apolo- ;ized. Samuel Hall, Philip Challis, Joseph Fletcher, Andrew Greeley, and George Martin, of Salis .; John Emery, Sen., of Nb., and nine others, who in- + sted on the right of petition, had " not given satisfaction," and were, in 1654, ejtired to give bonds and "answers for their offense before the County Courts." [" The New Puritan " prints " Hollis " and " Morton," which are "ilently mistakes, and doubtless should be Hall and Martin, as here given.]

J This may have been a second mar., but we have no record of another wife or chil. Richard Goodale, Sen., ment. his " bro." Philip Challis in 1666.

3 (10) Philip may be the same as (5), b. 1658; but most of the records can Ex better harmonized by supposing that there were two Philips of that gener-
