husband that Susanna Martin said " she would make her the miserablest crea- ture for defaming her name at the court." About two months after this, Brown says, his wife "would not own him," "and from that time to this very day [30 years or more] she has been under a strange kind of distemper and frenzy, incapable of any rational action, though strong and healthy of body." On the strength of this and other evidence, Susanna Martin was convicted and execu- ted as a witch. [See " The New Puritan," pp. 173-5].

4 IN SARAH, b. Nov. 25, 1689[A].

1 GEORGE BURROUGHS* [BURROUGH or BURROWS], Rev., grad. H. C. 1670 ; had three wives. In 1680 his wife's name was Hannah ; wife d. Sept., 1681, in Salem village. The mother of his younger chil. was Sarah, dau. of Thomast Ruck and sister of Samuel Ruck, of Salem. Mr. Burroughs was adm. Roxbury chh. April 12, 1674 ; preached at Falmouth [Portland] in 1676, when the town was destroyed by Indians; was preaching in Salisbury in 1680 ; in Danvers [Salem village] in 1681 and '82; again at Fal- mouth in 1683; afterwards at Wells, 1690. He was tried at Salem for witchcraft, Aug. 3 or 5, and executed Aug. 19, 1692. One of the strongest points in the evidence against him was his great strength. [See Upham's " Salem Witchcraft," vol. 1, pp. 255- 208, vol. 2, pp. 149-163, 296-804.] In the prob. office at Salem are some papers pertaining to his est., 1693 and 1701. Children :

VIII JEREMIAH, b. 1630-'S7; liv. 1701; insane.

10 IX JOSIAH, b. 1680-'S7; liv. 1701.

* Sv. thinks he was son of wid. Burrows, who came from Virginia to New Eng., and united with the Roxbury chh.

Some of the statements respecting the chil. of Geo. Burroughs, taken from Sr., are based on tradition. He states that Geo. and Thomas Burroughs, of Newburyport in 1774, were descendants of Rev. Geo. Burroughs. Upham "peaks of descendants bearing the names Newman, Fowle, and Holbrook, as well as Fox, Thomas, and Burroughs.

! W Ch. says dau, of John Ruck and wid. of Wm. Hathorn, Jr.

1 Charles, George, Jeremiah, and Josiah chose their uncle Sam. Ruck as guardian, in 1701. (3) George could not have been the son of Sarah Ruck.
