1 GEORGE BURROUGHS* [BURROUGH or BURROWS], Rev., grad. H. C. 1670 ; had three wives. In 1680 his wife's name was Hannah ; wife d. Sept., 1681, in Salem village. The mother of his younger chil. was Sarah, dau. of Thomast Ruck and sister of Samuel Ruck, of Salem. Mr. Burroughs was adm. Roxbury chh. April 12, 1674 ; preached at Falmouth [Portland] in 1676, when the town was destroyed by Indians; was preaching in Salisbury in 1680 ; in Danvers [Salem village] in 1681 and '82; again at Fal- mouth in 1683; afterwards at Wells, 1690. He was tried at Salem for witchcraft, Aug. 3 or 5, and executed Aug. 19, 1692. One of the strongest points in the evidence against him was his great strength. [See Upham's " Salem Witchcraft," vol. 1, pp. 255- 208, vol. 2, pp. 149-163, 296-804.] In the prob. office at Salem are some papers pertaining to his est., 1693 and 1701. Children :
