CONCLUSION.
The compiler of this volume desires to express his satisfaction that he has been able to complete, in accordance with the original plan, the work to which he has given so much time for several years. The publication would have been less full and complete had not assistance been rendered by various persons. Thanks are especially due to Mr. Charles A. Hoyt of New York City and Mr. Henry P. Upham of St. Paul, for valuable pecuniary aid ; also to Mr. Wm. H. Greenleaf, town clerk of Salisbury, Mr. J. W. Gale of Amesbury, Mrs. Ellen M. Little of Newbury, and Mr. W. W. Roberts, city clerk of Haverhill, for much assistance in searching the records of their respective towns, in order to clear up doubtful points and complete the records of particular families. Valuable assistance has also been rendered by Miss Elizabeth P. Nourse, Probate Office, Salem, Mass.
Two important errors have been the result of accepting as true, without verification from original records, the statements made in Coffin's History of Newbury and Chase's History of Haverhill. Each mistake arises from confounding two persons of about the
* Our notes of Nb. rec. give both named Joshua, but the first must be Joseph, as shown by deed, and will, and age at death.

same age, bearing the same name. These errors have been cor- rected on pages 386, 387, and slips have also been prepared for insertion at pages 46 and 78, where the errors occur. A third error is apparently the result of some person's misreading the expression, "daughter Sarah I reckon she had her full portion upon her marriage," in the will of Isaac Estey, Sen., of Topsfield, 1709-'11, and calling it " Sarah Ireland," etc., as given on page 175. It is almost impossible to distinguish Merrill from Morrill, and Bayley from Bagley on the old records. Three such errors have been corrected on the preceding pages, and other mistakes will doubtless be found, notwithstanding the care that has been exercised to secure accuracy. Different spellings of the same name are the result of following those found on the original records.
An expression of doubt, such as "prob." or "?," has been used in all cases where perfectly satisfactory proof has not been found. Its use does not generally mean probably wrong. In most cases, such statements will be found to be correct. Quite a number have already been proved to be so, as will appear from the preceding pages of minor corrections. The interrogation point [? ] is intended to apply only to the part included within the brackets or parentheses.
In general, those dates followed by brackets giving the town records from which they are taken are more likely to be accurate than those without such authority specified, except, of course, pro- bate records, which are presumably accurate. More care has been taken with the early dates ; those later than 1700 have sometimes been taken from other sources than original records. The defi- ciencies which are the result of the loss of the earliest records of Amesbury have been already explained. [Pp. 27-8.]
It will be noticed that the surnames of the wives of the earlier generations are often wanting. Some are herein printed for the first time, and it is hoped that other blanks may yet be filled by a study of early original documents, which may yet be found, either in this country or in England. No such lists of the names of women are vailable as are printed in this volume giving the names of men. Valuable exceptions are found on pages 24 and 375-6; but these ames of women give little clue to parentage.
