* The earliest Eaton grants of land in S. were to his father, John Eatos, Sen. The John Eaton, commoner of 1650, was not "Sen." In his will, John,- Sen., gave to his son John2 "all my living in Salis.," and some land in Hv.

t He may have been in London in March, 1661-5, as JOUN' HALL (John!) wrote to his mother that he had then accidentally met there John Eaton, an .! asaid, "I can discerne the face of a N: E: man though he forget mine." Eaton told Hall the name of his "new brother" [Rev. John Hale], who lived i !: "Satto in N: E:" Hall quoted a saying of his "Late father Worcester," at .: 1

seems to have sent the letter by Eaton. John1 Eaton, Sen., was living in 1665. but was probably too old to make the voyage to London.

#The presence of the name of (9) John3 on the list of 1680, p. 22, indicates that" he was b. bef. 1660. The S. records of births of this family from 1646 to 168' seem to be complete, and his name stands first in his father's will, in 1682. II. was, probably, the oldest son; but the date of the birth of his youngest chil: [1710] indicates that he m., when forty years of age, a wife much younger than himself. He may have been away from S. in 1677-8, oath al. and fid., p. 21.

§ Samuel was about "to go on a voyage" in 1683, His father's will, 19 -.. gave him house and land which John2 had of his " sister Wells," also land i": Haverhill.

* John1 speaks in his will of "my six children " and "grandchild Mary . Emerson." As he calls Abraham Merrill (who m. his wife's dau.) his " son," Mary Emerson may have been the daughter of his wife's daughter Hannah, who married an Emerson. His wife had eight Webster children, who could not all have been included in the " six children." As he mentions only three chil. by name, Ebenezer, Jonathan, and John, besides Abram Merrill, the meaning of the expression "my six children " is not easy to determine, but we have given what seems the most probable interpretation. Ebenezar may have been the child of a 2d wife and Jonathan of a Sd.
