ANNUAL REPORT, TOWN OF SCITUATE, 1938

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

To the Citizens of Scituate:

The Scituate School Committee is pleased to present the following report compiled by the Superintendent of Schools. Accounts of what has been accomplished as well as a statement of future needs have been discussed.

The 1939 school budget-$90,565 .- is somewhat larger than last year, in order to maintain and improve what has been developed.

A bronze tablet is being placed in the Jenkins School by Mrs. Amy Dalby as a memorial to her sister, Miss E. Gertrude Gardner, who had taught in Scituate forty- seven years and was beloved by all who knew her.

In April, Mr. Wingate was re-elected as Superintend- ent of Union No. 1-the towns of Scituate and Marsh- field-for the regular three-year period. His tact and sympathy are well known, and the Committee values his services highly.

The generous support of the public is sincerely ap- preciated.

Respectfully submitted, MARION C. ALEXANDER, RALPH S. BROWN, PETER W. SHARP, School Committee.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

To the School Committee of Scituate:

I take pleasure in submitting my thirteenth annual report for your consideration.

CHANGES IN OUR TEACHING STAFF

Three teacher resignations were received at the end of the last school year. Miss Adelaide Colburn, a member of the High School faculty for the past four years, accep- ted a position in the Melrose High School. The vacancy thus created was filled by the appointment of Miss Elea- nor Gile, a graduate of Bates College, 1929, and a student of advanced courses in English and Education at that institution. Miss Gile has been the teacher of English at the York, Maine, High School for the past seven years.

The resignation of Miss Helen Knox from her po- sition as second grade teacher at the Hatherly School was received in June. This vacancy was filled by the transfer of Miss Doris Crocker from grade five of the same school. The fifth grade position, thus made vacant, was filled by the appointment of Miss F. Thelma Annis of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, a graduate of Lowell Teachers' College and with one year's experience at Duxbury, Massachu- setts.

Miss Lois G. Cushing, a graduate of The Wheelock School, who was an assistant teacher in the first grade at the Hatherly School last year, was promoted to the position of regular teacher in this grade and Miss Carol Vollmer, a graduate last June of the Bridgewater Teach- ers' College, was appointed as her assistant.

8

ANNUAL REPORT, TOWN OF SCITUATE, 1938

The position of Supervisor of Music, made vacant by the retirement of Miss Jeanne E. Bradford, was filled by the appointment of Philip W. L. Cox, Jr., of Maple- wood, New Jersey. Mr. Cox is a graduate of the Music Education course at the University of Michigan. He has had six years' experience as instructor of vocal and in- strumental music in the public schools of Scarsdale and Albany, New York, and of Madison, New Jersey.

The Special Class that was started at the Jenkins School towards the end of the last school year is being continued this year under the direction of Mrs. Rose M. Trefry. About ten pupils are enrolled, five of them from the Hatherly School district. The class is making good progress and seems to be appreciated by the par- ents of the children.

UPKEEP OF BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Among the major repairs undertaken this year was the remodeling of the boys' toilet room at the Hatherly School. Six new porcelain urinals were installed as well as two white enamel sinks. In connection with this the drainage line to the cesspool was lowered. At the Jenk- ins School two new celotex ceilings were placed over the badly-cracked plastered ceilings in the first and third grade rooms. At the High School, the interiors of the classrooms in the east wing of the building were painted; some of the desk tops were refinished; the ceiling in the boys' toilet room was replaced; and a large ventilating fan was installed in the outside wall of the boiler room. An oil heater was placed in the Household Arts build- ing.

Equipment purchased during the year included twelve kindergarten and twelve visitors' chairs at the Hatherly School. A typewriter desk was placed in the Principal's office at the High School, and a large safe-

for the adequate protection of records-was also installed there. The small electric refrigerator in the cafeteria was replaced by a much larger one, and a new jig saw machine was added to the Practical Arts equipment. A Balopticon projector was purchased for the use of var- ious high school groups, and a bass viol was added to the list of school-owned instruments in the music de- partment. A Standard duplicating machine was placed in the Superintendent's office, and a small hand loom was added to the equipment of the Household Arts De- partment.
