Mr. McClellan offered the following substitute motion, which was duly seconded :
That the laying out of a Town way from Massachusetts Avenue to Appleton Place, substantially in the location of the private way known as Burton Street, as more particu- larly described in Article 15a of the Warrant, under the provisions of law authorizing the assessment of better- ments, as made and filed in the office of the Town Clerk by the Joint Board of Selectmen and Board of Public Works, be accepted, said way established and said Joint Board authorized to take land for the purpose of said way.
Note: Recommendation for materials, equipment, etc., $6,305.37 to be included in appropriation under Article 26.
Total cost of completion is estimated at $11,803.22.
The Moderator was asked to give Father O'Connor permission to speak on this Article, which was granted; a similar request was granted to Mr. Bailey, Mr. Lane and Mr. Bain.
After much discussion the Previous Question was moved and seconded, and being put to a vote the Moderator declared it carried.

ADJOURNED TOWN MEETING
Arlington, April 3, 1940.
Pursuant to the vote of Adjournment April 1, 1940, the Town Meeting Members met in the Town Hall on Wednes- day evening, April 3, 1940, notices having been sent to the Town Meeting Members, and also posted in each of the precinct boxes in the Town.
Lists of the duly qualified Town Meeting Members were used at the entrances of the meeting place and were in charge of Philip T. Robinson and James E. Sweeney.
The check lists filed with the Town Clerk at the close of the meeting showed that one hundred and seventy-three attended the meeting.
The Moderator called the meeting to order at 8:10 P.M.

That the Town do not now make an appropriation for the purpose of completing inside telephone system in the new high school building and altering system in old high school building, under Article 33 of the Warrant.
Mr. Bevins moved that there be substituted for the motion of the Finance Committee the following :
That the sum of five thousand ($5,000.00) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the purpose of completing inside telephone system in the new high school building and altering system in old high school building so that both may be connected to one desk type switchboard; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the School Committee.
On being put to a vote the Moderator declared it lost.

Voted: That the Town do not now make an appro- priation for the purpose of completing inside telephone sys- tem in the new high school building and altering system in old high school building, under Article 33 of the War- rant.

Article 34 taken up. (Replacing Boilers-Russell School)
The Finance Committee recommended the following:
That the sum of thirty-six hundred ($3,600.00) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the purpose of replacing three tubular steel boilers with two cast iron boilers at the Russell School building; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the School Com- mittee.
A vote was taken and the Moderator being in doubt called for a new vote and declared the motion lost. His rul- ing was doubted and he called for a rising vote with the result that 66 voted in the affirmative and 80 in the nega- tive and the Moderator declared the motion lost.
There being no further business under Article 34 the Moderator declared it disposed of.
Article 35 taken up. (Roof Repairs-Locke School)
On motion, duly made and seconded, it was unanimous- ly
Voted : That the sum of thirty-six hundred ($3,600.00) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the purpose of re- placing gutters and conductors with new copper and mak- ing other minor roof repairs on Locke School building; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the School Committee.
There being no further business under Article 35 the Moderator declared it disposed of.

Lowe, Jr., Memorial Auditorium, and estimates of the cost of same, said Committee to report to the Town not later than the Annual Meeting of 1941; and that the sum of fifty dollars ($50.00) be and hereby is appropriated for the use of the Committee and that said sum be raised by general tax.
On being put to a vote the Moderator declared it car- ried. Thereupon, it was
Voted: That the School Committee be and hereby is authorized and empowered on behalf of the Town, to pro- cure preliminary plans and specifications for the completion of the George H. Lowe, Jr., Memorial Auditorium, and estimates of the cost of same, said Committee to report to the Town not later than the Annual Meeting of 1941; and that the sum of fifty dollars ($50.00) be and hereby is ap- propriated for the use of the Committee and that said sum be raised by general tax.

That the School Committee be and hereby is authorized and empowered on behalf of the Town, to procure plans and specifications for the construction of a four room addition to the Hardy School building, and estimates of the cost of such addition and of the original equipment and furnish- ings thereof and of the grading of the grounds of said school, the School Committee to report to the Town not later than the Annual Meeting of 1941; and that the sum of three hundred ($300.00) dollars be and hereby is appro- priated for the use of the Committee and that said sum be raised by general tax.
On being put to a vote the Moderator declared the mo- tion lost.
