John Mendum, born 22 April 1790, was employed for many years by the Eastern Stage Company and drove the accommo- dation and mail stage from Portsmouth to Boston. He was one of the most popular and careful drivers on the line, so much so that the traveling public would plan to make their trips to Boston on his days of service. He was never known to meet with an accident. Among the young people he was a great favorite. The school boys would watch for his arrival, and when the stage swung down Lafayette Street in Portsmouth they would form a line on each side of the street, lift their hats and cheer. Benja- min P. Shillaber has commemorated him in a stanza :
"Small boys, now clear the way ! That dusty cloud Adown the street proclaims a coach and four : Why. 'tis Jack Mendum, with importance proud. Driving his stage to the Blue Tavern door."
