OLD KITTERY
STACKPOLE.1
On the soutern coast of Wales, about six miles from Pem- broke, there rises a columnar mass of limestone, called the STACK ROCK. It is at the mouth of an inlet or pool, which is named from the rock the Stack-pool. A Norman, said to have been knighted by William the Conqueror, built his castle on this inlet and was called Richard de Stackpol, since pol in old English meant a pool of water. The castle has been remodeled more than once. yet the foundations remain the same, and it has for about eight centuries borne the name of STACKPOLE COURT. It is at present the seat of the Earl of Cawdor. The Stackpole coat of arms, found in a roll of arms of date about 1250, is a red rampant lion, having a gold collar, on a silver shield. The lineage of the Pembrokeshire Stackpoles for two or three cen- turies is on record at the College of Heraldry in London. It declares that Sir Robert Stackpole went with Strongbow to the conquest of Ireland in 1168. His descendants became numerous in Ireland, especialy in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, holding many official positions. Twenty mayors, aldermen and recorders by the name of Stackpole are found in the records of Limerick from 1450 to 1650.
Until within a century the name was spelled Stacpole. James Stacpole was born in 1652, as a deposition shows, and probably came from Limerick, Ireland, although a tradition says he came from Sligo. He was living in what is now Rollinsford, N. H., in 1680 and in December of that year is mentioned in an account as hauling boards from Thomas Holmes' mill to Cochecho Point. He was taxed in Dover in 1680, 1681, and 1682. About this time he married Margaret, dau. of James and Margaret Warren. From 1693 to 1699 he kept a house of entertainment, or tavern, at Great Works, South Berwick. In 1710 he bought what is now the Samuel Hale estate in Rollinsford, N. H., and here he died in 1736. OLD KITTERY
STAPLES.
Peter Staple, as the name was for a long time written, had a grant of land in 1671, and he bought land of Thomas Turner on Long Reach 4 July 1674. He and wife Elizabeth deeded this to son Peter in 1694. March 9. 1679, there were "measured and laid out unto Peter Staple five acres of land by town grant to his wife in her widowhood bearing date in december 13. 1669." See York Deeds. V. Part i fol. 87. The town records of Kit- tery say that 13 Dec. 1669, there were "granted to Elizabeth Edwards five acres of upland joining to ye above said Christopher Beadle's land." This shows that Peter Staple married Elizabeth, widow of Stephen Edwards. Compare page 92. Various deeds indicate pretty plainly that she was a daughter of Robert Beadle, though absoute proof is lacking. The same day that the town granted five acres to her there were granted "to Christopher Beadle ten acres of upland at ye head of ye lot that was his father's in ve Long Reach." The will of Peter Staple, dated 6 June 1718. was probated 7 April 1719. Wife was living in 1720. Three sons named in the will :
