SMALL.1
Edward Small came to the Pascataqua about 1632 and was a magistrate in 1640. He sold his land to Antipas Maverick in 1647 and was of the Istes of Shoals in 1653. Nothing more is known of him.
Francis Small was born in 1627, as a deposition shows. Some have supposed him to have been son of the above Edward Small, and the supposition is a natural one but has not been proved. In 1648 he lived in Dover, N. H. Had wife Elizabeth, born 1634. Her maiden name may have been Leighton. In 1668 he bought a large tract of land, known as Ossipee, of an Indian chief and had dwelling house and trading post there, supposed to have been located in what is now Cornish, Me. He was at Kittery in 1668. About 1700 he left Kittery and went to live with his son Daniel at Truro, Mass., where he died about 1714 or 1715. Children :

8. Thomas Spinney married Tamsen, dau. of Joseph and Tamsen ( Meserve) Ham of Dover, N. H., who was born 19 July 1708. Hon. Mark Dennett left the following record: "A girl named Tamsen Ham was taken captive by the Indians and was held captive by them some years, but was at length redeemed or given up by the Indians and was afterwards married to Thomas Spinney, who lived where the late John Rogers, who married their daughter Dorothy, lived, near the road opposite the Martin house in Eliot. Mrs. Tamsen Spinney lived to great age and the writer was at her funeral some time between 1801 and 1805." In a deed dated 1769 and published in Old Eliot Vol. II. p. 85, this Thomas Spinney mentions land received of his father Thomas and names children John, Mercy, Eleanor and Dorothy. Children :

10. Andrew Spinney married, 25 June 1726, Abigail, dau. of John and Ann ( Nutter) Wingate of Dover, N. H. She was born 2 March 1704. She was made guardian of his children, minors, John, Anne, Reuben and Mary, 21 July 1755. Children :

16. Isaac Spinney, born 22 March 1778, son of Capt. William and Mary ( Libby ) Spinney, married, 16 Aug. 1807 Mary, dau. of Samuel and Mary ( Paul) Tobey and lived on the old Tobey farm in Eliot. He died 12 Sept. 1853. Wife died Aug. 1869, aged 84. Children :
