He became a soldier in the Ameri- can army, and esrved during the war of independence. The grandmother of Capt. Lewis, elec of Welsh descent, was one of the survivors of the massacre at Wyoming, having escaped by drifting down the Susquehanna, the night alter, in a flat-boat. His grandfather on his mother's side, Patrick McKennin, a Scotch-Irishman, who came to this country before the Revolution, aleo became a soldier in the Continental army and served during the war. He wes wounded at the battle of Brandywine. He died at the age of ninety years. Mury, his wife, was a German girl, who came to this country when quite young, and was sold by the captain of the vessel for payment of her passage, as was often the case at that period. Capt. Lewis' father was Benjamin Lewis, of Chester County, somewhat extensively known as a school-teacher, and during the last few years of his life engaged at Gause's Academy, on the Brandywine, near Marshalteo, and who died in his twenty-ninth year. D. W. C. Lewis was born near West Chester, July 30, 1822, and after the death of his father lived with the family of Joseph Taylor, father of Bayard Taylor, during the boyhood of the poet, and afterwards settled in West Chester, where, with Samuel Way, he learned the carpenter'e trade. When eighteen years old he joined the National Grays, then commanded by Capt. William Apple. On the breaking out of the Mexican war he joined, as one of its first members, the National Guarde, which company tendered its services to the Governor, but it was not called into active service.

He served as Ist lieut. in Co. E, 9th Pa. Vole., three monthe' men, and alter lie time had expired raised this company, of whom, Feb. 29, 1864, at Fernandina, Fla., forty-five men re-enlisted as veterans for the war.)
