In Phoenixville the " Wayne Gaarde" and the " Phoenix Artillerists" were or- ganized early in the spring of 1861, but these two companins, after offering themselves to the government for months and being refused, because the call had already been filled, kept up their organizatico in expectation of a further requisition for troope, and drilled regularly. At length the summons for three years' med 'came, and oo June 6 these two companies, accompanied by the al- most entire population of that borough, marched to the depot aod departed. The Guards were taken to New York, becoming Co. K, of the 7let (California) Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and the Artillerists to Camp Wayne, at West Chester, where they were mustered in as Company G of the Ist PenneyIva- nia Reserves.
In the fall of 1861 some men from Schuylkill towoship enlisted in Co. F, 88th P. V., and the same season Lieut. Eugene J. Weeks took from Phoenixville & detachment of meo who united with Co. I, 67th P. V.
In August, 1862, a detachment of Chester County volunteers, under the com- mand of Lieut. C. W. Sears, joined.Co. F, 150th P. V.
In the western part of the county many men crossed over into Lancaster and enlisted, while duriog a later period hundreds went to Philadelphia and joined the service; hence it is impossible to get the names and records of such, or of any not recruited for Chester County organizations.
