Walker Pass Crash Kills Isabella Man

A Lake Isabella manı was burned beyond recognition in a flaming crash on Walker Pass Saturday and two other valley residents were injured In traffic accidents last weekend.

John Henry Lanier, 64, of Weaver Trailer Park in Mt. Mesa, was travelling along Highway 178 near Walker Pass and passed an Inyokern newsman at a high rate of speed. Lanier's vehicle went over the hill where he apparently lost control of the car and burst into flames 112 miles west of Walker Pass. The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m.

The newsman reached the scene, but said the fire had overtaken the vehicle and he was unable to reach the victim. He reported that the horn was blowing and ammunition inside the car was exploding. The car appa- rently grazed a large rock as it veered off the highway.

California Highway Patrol officer Verble Pierce responded to the call

with a unit from the Lake Isabella station of Kern County Fire Depart. ment. Working in conjunction, they were able to arrest the Inferno and remove the charred body.

Coroner's assistant, Don Wigginton, said the body was so badly burned that even dental records would supply only sketchy identification. But, upon locating Lanier's son, a Bakersfield attorney, James T. Lanier, dental records were supplied and It was confirmed that the elder Lanler was travelling on that highway at the time of the crashi.

Although the body was removed from the passenger side of the vehicle, there was only one occupant and it is possible the body shifted upon impact. With a history of heart problems, it is felt that Lanier could have suffered a seizure, but due to the extent of the burns the coroner's office could not determine the exact cause of death.

Later that evening, Arthur Plasen-

cia, 23, of Lake Isabella was headed west on Kern Canyon Road in his 1953 Dodge flatbed truck. He lost control of the vehicle 150 yards east of Miracle Hot Springs, skidding on the ice.

A passenger, Coleen Dove, 10, also of Lake Isabella, was treated for injuries at Kern Valley Hospital and released. Driver was not injured and reported the crash at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

At 2:25 p.m. Sunday, January 16, Steven Michael Miranda of Weldon was apparently speeding down Fay Canyon Road in a car registered to Russell Green of Taft. Miranda reportedly went home and was head- ing back to pick up Green when he lost control of the vehicle, went through a fence along the roadside, and over- turned.

Miranda, 25, suffered facial lacera- tions and went to Kern Valley Hospital via private velicle
