ACCIDENT

One Killed

Car Rolls Over

A single-car rollover accident Saturday night killed an Onyx man and pinned his wife inside the wreckage with serious injuries. The woman remained in the car for almost 12 hours before the accident was discovered by passing youths on motorcycles.

Killed in the accident waa Armand Joseph Reno, who had been driving his wife's 1974 Mercury Cougar east- bound on Highway 178 two-tenths of a mlle east of South Lake Drive. His wife, Pearl C. Reno, received a broken left leg in the accident, a possible neck fracture, cuts and abrasions. She was also suffering from exposure when rescued because of the cold night weather. She has been transported to Kern Medical Center where her condition is listed as "serious."

The car left the road for an unknown reason as Reno was rounding a gentle curve. His wife said that he had ap- prently fallen asleep at the wheel.

CHP Officers investigating repor- ted the odor of alcohol about his per- son, but it was not known whether that had impaired his ability to drive.

The car overturned down a steep embankment and came to rest 50 feet below the roadside, out of sight of traffic. The car rested there from the time of the accident, about 11 p.m. un- til discovered around 10:30 Sunday morning by six motorcyclists.

The youths finding the care were Wes Nelson, James Orlando, Richard Earhardt, Brent Henstra, James Spears, and Ronnle Poole.

Besides the youths, CHP Officer Jim Malouf credited Kern Valley Hospital emergency room doctor Robert P. George with stopping at the scene to help with the victims.

Malouf pointed out that this was the third fatal accident alnce the new year began, with the third person killed. This compares with two fatals, two persons killed at this time last year.

A serious accident February 17 became the valley's second fatal last week with the death at a Bakersfield hospital of Ivan Lebovics, 10, of Ridgecrest. Lebovics died from head injuries sustained in the head-on crash.

.The other fatality occured in January in a collision between a truck and a small motorcycle, in Lake Isabella.
