PREFACE.

Herewith the compiler has the honor of presenting to his patrons and the general public, the eighth volume of Webb's Jacksonville and Consolidated Directory. From a primer size in 1876 it has grown with the cities and State, sharing their fortunes and con- tributing in its own way to their growth-till it has arrived at its present size. It represents, we are proud to say, the enterp ise of the people in the cities for which it is published, an ! is a silent but eloquent testimonial of their unqualified success.

Without their practical endorsement it would be impossible to issue such a wor . nd it is they who should have full meed of praise if any is deserved, instead of the compiler, for he is but an instrument in accomplishing results. A new Directory, enlarged and improved, will be issued as usual in January, '88. Duly ap- preciating the confidence bestowed, and hoping always to deserve it,

The People's Servant,

Jacksonville, January, 1887.

··· HOTEL. ..

E. E. VAILL,

-

- Proprietor.

1889.

This Spacious and Elegant Hotel occupies the most commanding situation in the city ; having recently been enlarged to double its former capacity, offers superior accommodations to the traveling public.

It has a southerly front of 200 feet upon the Plaza, or Public Square, an easterly front of 160 feet upon the Bay, with wide piazzas and hanging balconies from each story, overlooking the City, Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

The House has recently been entirely refitted and refurnished throughout ; the Dining Room, Parlors, Billiard Room and Sleeping Rooms elegantly frescoed. It is lighted with gas and pro- vided with every modern improvement, including water conveniences, electric bells, etc.

The Dining Hall is capable of seating over 300 guests, and the table will be furnished with all the luxuries of the Northern markets.

At this Hotel every convenience will be found in the way of Telegraph and Ticket Offices, Bar and Billiard Saloons, etc., etc.

Music daily by the United States Artillery Band.

The Climate of St. Augustine is unsurpassed. For many years it has been the favorite resort for thousands of invalids and others who desire to escape the rigid winters of the North.

"Ye Ancient City " possesses more attractions than any other place on this continent ; promi- nent among which are the old fort of "San Marco," with its dungeons ; the ancient Cathedral, Spanish Government House, Coquina buildings, narrow streets, with overhanging balconies, sea walls, etc., etc.

The City has a very eventful history, and still retains all of the characteristics of its Spanish origin. The United States Government built a sea wall, extending the entire length of the city, as a protection from the waves during severe storms, which is much used as a fashionable prome- nade for both citizens and strangers. It is a favorite resort on moonlight nights, which are enjoyed here to perfection.

Persons wishing to avoid the cold weather of the North, or afflicted with pulmonary com- plaints, will find St. Augustine one of the most desirable places in the world.

To reach St. Augustine from New York there are four distinct routes : " All Rail " to Jack- sonville, thence by J., St. A. & H. R. R., J., T. & K. W. R'y, or boat to Tocoi (forty miles up the St. Johns River, daily), and thence by rail fourteen miles to St. Augustine, or by steamer to Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville or Fernandina, and by boat or rail from thence to St. Augustine.

Steamers to Charleston twice a week.
