RICHEST, MOST PRODUCTIVE, BEST SITUATED AND BEST DRAINED GARDEN LAND IN FLORIDA.

From the four million acres of land bought by Mr. Disston, the lands owned by the St. Cloud Co. were selected as being the best. The selection was made by Capt. R. E. Rose, for several years the superintendent of the Okeechobee Co., at Kissimmee City, and now the president of the St. Cloud Co. No man has a more thorough knowledge of the country than he, and the large crops of Rice, Cabbage, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Bananas, Strawberries and other vegetables and fruits raised on the St. Cloud farm have fully justified the wisdom of his selection. The lands are situated on Lake East Tohopekaliga, about six miles from Kissimmee, and are thoroughly drained by the canal connecting Lake Tohopekaliga and East Lake, on both sides of which the lands of the Company are situated.

Any information regarding the condition of the lands, crops raised, prices, etc., will be cheerfully afforded.

KISSIMMEE CITY. FLA.

FERNANDINA.

[THE ISLAND CITY.] Population, 4,224.

FEW cities in the State can offer the same advantages to settlers, builders, wholesale merchants, manufacturers, or any one in the pursuit of health and wealth as Ferdandina, the county seat of Nassau County. This City is situated on Amelia Island, at the northeast corner of Florida, thirty-three miles by rail from Jack- sonville. It lies on the south bank of the St. Mary's River, which stream divides this county from Georgia.

Amelia Island is about twenty-two miles long, by an average width of two miles, being separated from the mainland by a nar- row river of the same name. The island presents a somewhat rugged surface, the soil being sandy, mixed with shells, except in the low or swampy portions, where the land is much richer. The climate here is superb, being protected in winter from severe frosts by the surrounding water, and enjoying delightful sea breezes in summer.

One of the principal attractions of Fernandina is its magnificent sea-beach, which is reached from the city by a pleasant drive of two miles along a smooth shell road. For about twenty miles, in an almost straight line, the beach presents a hard-beaten, smooth surface. making it one of the finest drives in America.

The harbor here is one of the finest on the South Atlantic coast, being roomy enough to accommodate the fleets of all the great powers of the world at one time. There are nineteen feet of water on the bar at high tide. From this port are shipped immense quantities of naval stores and lumber to Europe, South America, and other parts of the world.

The city is regularly laid out, fronting on Cumberland Sound and Amelia River, with fine broad avenues running parallel and at right angles with each other, the central street being called Centre, and the streets running parallel to it being lettered, while those crossing it at right angles, but parallel with the harbor, are num- bered.

Fernandina has made wonderful progress during the past year or two. Solid brick blocks have taken the place of ricketty wooden buildings, and every thing has a substantial appearance. There are a number of handsome residences and neat church edifices.

The Florida Town Improvement Company has recently placed upon the market vast quantities of land, city lots, etc., which for a number of years have not been offered for sale, and they are now offering the most liberal terms to all, and especially to actual set- . tlers, or those desirous of building. Mr. Samuel A. Swann, the

-

resident manager of the Company, has done much to promote the interests of the city, by liberal business transactions and shrewd management of the company's business, which has resulted in the mutual benefit of all concerned.

The population of the place, as found by Webb's Directory Corps, is 4,224, a large increase over any previous year.

The city owes its importance not only to its splendid harbor, but it is also the northeastern terminus of two important lines of railway, viz: The Florida Railway & Navigation Company, and a branch of the same Company ; the Fernandina and Jacksonville Railroad. These roads are both under one management, the main office being at Jacksonville in the company's new building, Bay corner of Julia.

Fernandina is not lacking in hotel accommodations, there being some of the finest hostelries in the State here. The Egmont is under the proprietorship of Mr. William P. Davis, a well known and long established host. There is a lovely Palmetto Park in front of the Egmont, carpeted with perennial green, which is the favorite croquet, cricket and bowling grounds of the guests. The hotel is superior in every appointment. Mr. Davis is also propri- etor of the Pavilion Hotel at Gloucester, Mass., a favorite summer resort. The Mansion House is convenient to the business, post- office, depots and landings. Guests of the house always meet with excellent treatment and a good bill of fare. There is a solid, home- like comfort about the place which travelers always appreciate. There are also the Florida House, the Tourists' Hotel, and numer- ous boarding houses.

The Florida Mirror, a live, newsy family paper, is edited by Major George F. Fairbanks, the eminent Florida historian.

Fernandina is the Florida terminus of the Mallory Line of Steam- ships, running between this point and New York. This line has recently completed a new wharf at the foot of Centre street, and passengers from the F. R. & N. Co.'s road have but to step from the train on to the gangway of the steamer, which adds much to their convenience. Besides the Mallory, there may be mentioned the Clyde Line, between New York and Jacksonville, which calls at Fernandina, and the People's Independent Line to Brunswick, Ga., and other local lines.

Lumbering, the manufacture of palmetto and palm-fibre, and the railroad and steamer lines constitute the main industries. But there is no better point in Florida for the establishment of a whole- sale trade for the interior, in such articles as hay, grain, fertilizers, farm supplies, builders' materials, &c. It is, also, an excellent point for the establishment of various manufactories -- cotton mills, oil mills, door, sash and blind factories. Such industries would not fail of returning a most lucrative compensation.
