In 1881 Mr. G. W. Smith came to Bartow, "the trip from Or- lando, with his family and household effects, being made in ox- carts over. rough trails and swollen unbridged streams. They were eight days on the way, camping at night. Is it any wonder that Bartow, or Polk County, fertile at it is, is not more thickly peopled ? Mr. Smith was pleased with the country, its advanta- ges and its opportunities, and having had extensive experience in other sections, he knew a good thing when he saw it. He there- fore purchased about one-sixth of the then surveyed town, bought a saw-mill, and later opened a store."
On July 1st, 1882, the corporate government was organized. Only 28 legal voters were found in the corporate limits, and of these 22 were present. Since that time there has been one contin-

uous line of improvements. A new court house was built in 1884, which has been followed by new hotels, churches, fine residences, business blocks, too numerous to mention. It is the intention to make Bartow an educational centre, by the establishing of a college here, lands and several thousands of dollars having already been subscribed for that purpose. An ice factory is also a new enterprise recently established by E. W. Codington, Esq., president of the Bartow Board of Trade. The Polk County Bank, F. W. Page, president, and William J. Emerson, cashier, is the pioneer bank, and does a good business.
" The Bartow of to-day comprises a beautiful tract of rolling country, wide streets crossing each other at right angles, beautiful oaks and other delightful shade trees scattered throughout the cor- poration, substantial plank sidewalks and crossings in the chief business portion of the town, though the ground is so firm, and yet absorbs the falling rain so quickly, that they are very little needed. The untraveled parts of the streets, the uncultivated parts of the yards and the fields are covered with a vigorous growth of grass. Orange groves abound, and outside of the business part of the rapidly-growing town the lessening tracts of pine, and of pine intermingled with oak, will not long await their destiny, for they are being removed to make place for buildings and groves, and gardens of fruits, vegetables and flowers."
Having read a brief account of this young and growing city the reader is respectfully referred to the following pages which give the names of the people, a classified list of the business men and a record of officials, institutions, societies, corporations, etc., etc. To be represented in this book a city must not only have a suffi- cient number of people but it must have business enough and enterprise enough to support it. Look over the list and those names in prominent type may safely be classed among the earnest, active workers for Bartow's supremacy in the near future as a busi- ness centre and a successful city numbering many thousands.
HOMELAND .- Six miles south of Bartow, on the Florida Southern Railway, is the village of Homeland, established January, 1886, surrounded by the same kind of rich and fertile country as Bartow. It may be called a suburb of Bartow for in the near future there will be one succession of happy homes between the two places. It already has express, telegraph, and U. S. post offices and several business enterprises.
